The change in product diversity and sense of quality to increase customer satisfaction has also affected the design and management of assembly lines. Keeping the amount of stock at desired levels to provide parts to the assembly line and prevent the accumulation of stocks at assembly line has become an increasingly challenging problem for manufacturing companies that have high product diversity and high model variability. Increasing the number of vehicles might be a solution to control stock level but this leads to in-plant traffic problem. Therefore, a balance should be maintained between stock and traffic level to overcome this challenge. Although there is a comprehensive literature on assembly line optimization, assembly line part feeding problem has been addressed by relatively few studies. In this thesis, we aim to minimize the number of tours needed to feed the assembly line and the line side stock of a company which has many production lines and produces a wide variety of products. A bi-objective mathematical model is developed to produce a transportation schedule for each vehicle driver. Since, the mathematical model is solved optimally for only small-size problems, a problem-specific heuristic algorithm is developed to solve large-size problems. The heuristic algorithm generates solutions within a very short time period for large-size problems. The heuristic algorithm is capable to produce almost all nondominated solutions.

A novel hybrid method using fuzzy decision making and multi-objective programming for sustainable-reliable supplier selection in two-echelon supply chain design
Tirkolaee, Erfan Babaee; Mardani, Abbas; Dashtian, Zahra; Soltani, Mehdi; Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm (Elsevier BV, 2020-03-20)
Recently, large companies have shown a growing tendency to enhance the reliability and sustainability of their supply chains to increase customers' satisfaction in terms of on-time fulfillment of demands and to be compatible with environmental regulations. Therefore, finding the best approaches to achieve companies' goals is a crucial concern in supply chain management, and the majority of organizations prefer to cooperate with reliable and sustainable companies. In designing a supply chain, the supplier se...
A Two stage approach for hybrid-assembly line design
Şimşek, Doğukan; Kırca, Ömer; Department of Industrial Engineering (2014)
The aim of the study is to propose an approach for hybrid assembly line design in the make-to-order and mixed-model environment. In this context, the main goal is to reduce lead-time, which is one of the key concepts of competitive markets. A systematic approach was employed for designing of hybrid assembly line in order to achieve the goal. The line is divided into two parts in a hybrid system: while the first part of the line works as a closed-loop system for instant replenishment of Constant Work in Prog...
Managing product variety through delayed product differentiation using vanilla boxes
Burhan, Özlem; Meral, Fatma Sedef; Department of Industrial Engineering (2004)
In an attempt to reduce costs and improve customer satisfaction, manufacturers have been adopting strategies such as Delayed Product Differentiation (DPD) while managing broader product lines. In this study, first a general framework on DPD is formed in the light of basic articles in the literature. The vanilla box assembly process which is a special form of modular design type of DPD is modeled and analyzed. In the vanilla box assembly process, inventory is stored in a special form of semi-finished product...
A Case Study of Using Innovation Catcher as an Innovation Performance Assessment Framework for Housing Projects
Bilgin, Pınar; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat (2020-11-14)
The crucial role of innovation in improving or even maintaining the strategic position and competitive advantage of construction companies in a highly competitive industry is widely acknowledged. In this sense, construction companies are spending a substantial amount of money and time on innovation activities. However, an in-depth literature review showed that available innovation assessment frameworks are not capable of revealing the outputs of these investments and capturing the actual innovation performa...
A Novel Interactive Fuzzy Programming Approach for Optimization of Allied Closed-Loop Supply Chains
Calik, Ahmet; YAPICI PEHLİVAN, NİMET; PAKSOY, TURAN; Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm (2018-01-01)
In recent years, the relationship between companies and suppliers has changed with the continuous rise in environmental awareness and customer expectations. In order to fulfill customers' needs, the actors in a Supply Chain (SC) network sometimes compete and sometimes cooperate with each other. In SC management, both competitive and collaborative strategies have become important and have required different points of view. In a collaborative environment, companies should strive for common targets with mutual...
