AASHTO's (American Association State Highway and Transportation Officials) simplified method of analysis for multiple-span regular bridges requires modeling and analysis of the structures and it is not less time-consuming than performing a computer-aided response spectrum analysis. Furthermore, for single-span bridges. AASHTO specifications do not require a seismic analysis. The connections between the superstructure and substructure are designed for a minimum load calculated as the product of site coefficient, the acceleration coefficient and the tributary permanent load. This may result in underestimation of seismically induced forces in connections. To overcome such problems, analytical equations are derived to calculate the fundamental period and seismically induced forces and displacements in the structural components of a class of regular steel bridges. The equations are derived considering the effect of deck width, number and length of spans, bearing types and their stiffness, on the dynamic behavior of bridges. The results from multi-mode response spectrum analysis and those obtained from the derived equations have shown good agreement. Thus, these equations may be used in lieu of AASHTO's simplified analysis method for the seismic analysis of regular steel bridges. It was also observed that AASHTO's simplified analysis method for single-span bridges underestimates the seismically induced forces in fixed bearings.

Quantitative approach to rapid seismic evaluation of slab-on-girder steel highway bridges
Dicleli, Murat (1996-01-01)
A quantitative approach follows for developing a methodology for the rapid seismic evaluation and ranking of slab-on-girder steel highway bridges. In the development of this methodology, analytical expressions are introduced to calculate the seismically induced forces and displacements in bridge components, first assuming that damage to bearings is not acceptable and then removing this constraint. In the latter case, the superstructure is assumed to become unrestrained and slide on its supports. The seismic...
Detailed load rating analyses of bridge populations using nonlinear finite element models and artificial neural networks
Hasançebi, Oğuzhan (2013-11-01)
For assessing load rating capacity of bridges, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Manual (AASHTO) recommends a simple method, where distribution of the forces in transverse direction is estimated by axle-load distribution factors on a simply supported beam. Although the method is practical in the sense that it allows for rapid evaluation of bridge populations, it leads to over-conservative load ratings. A finite element (FE) based load rating analysis is conceived as a more a...
Comparative assessment of the efficiency of seismic isolation for seismic retrofitting of highway bridges in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity
Karalar, Memduh; Dicleli, Murat (null; 2019-07-06)
In this paper, the economical and structural efficiency of friction pendulum bearings (FPB) for retrofitting typical seismically vulnerable bridges in the State of Illinois is studied. For this purpose, a bridge was selected by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to represent typical seismically vulnerable bridges commonly used in the State of Illinois. A comprehensive structural model of the bridge was first constructed for seismic analysis. An iterative multi-mode response spectrum (MMRS) ana...
Comparison of ASCE/SEI Standard and modal pushover-based ground motion scaling procedures for pre-tensioned concrete bridges
Özgenoğlu, Müge; Arıcı, Yalın (2017-01-01)
Complex analysis methods such as non-linear time-history analyses (NTHA) are often required for the design of non-standard bridges. The selection of the ground motions for the NTHA is a crucial task as the results of the analyses show a wide variability according to the selected records. In order to predict the demand in accordance with the seismic hazard conditions of the site, the selected motions are usually modified by scaling procedures. Within this context, the performance of two scaling methods, name...
A comprehensive parametric study on the performance of seismic-isolated bridges
Dicleli, Murat (null; 2006-07-16)
This paper presents the effect of isolator and substructure properties as well as the frequency characteristics and intensity of ground motion on the performance of seismic-isolated bridges (SIBs) and examines some critical design clauses in the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials) Guide Specification for Seismic Isolation Design. For this purpose, a parametric study, involving more than 800 nonlinear time history analyses of simplified structural models representative of ...
