This paper presents the effect of isolator and substructure properties as well as the frequency characteristics and intensity of ground motion on the performance of seismic-isolated bridges (SIBs) and examines some critical design clauses in the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials) Guide Specification for Seismic Isolation Design. For this purpose, a parametric study, involving more than 800 nonlinear time history analyses of simplified structural models representative of typical SIBs, is conducted. The results from the parametric study are then used to derive important design recommendations and conclusions that may be used by bridge engineers to arrive to a more sound and economical design of SIBs.

Effect of isolator and ground motion characteristics on the performance of seismic-isolated bridges
Dicleli, Murat (Wiley, 2006-02-01)
This paper presents the effect of isolator and substructure properties as well as the frequency characteristics and intensity of the ground motion on the performance of seismic-isolated bridges (SIBs) and examines some critical design clauses in the AASHTO Guide Specification for Seismic Isolation Design. For this purpose, a parametric study, involving more than 800 non-linear time history analyses of simplified structural models representative of typical SIBs, is conducted. The results from the parametric ...
An improvement to linear-elastic procedures for seismic performance assessment
Gunay, Mehmet Selim; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2010-07-10)
An improved linear-elastic analysis procedure is developed in this paper as a simple approximate method for displacement-based seismic assessment of the existing buildings. The procedure is mainly based on reducing the stiffness of structural members that are expected to respond in the inelastic range in a single global iteration step. Modal spectral displacement demands are determined from the equal displacement rule. Response predictions obtained from the proposed procedure are evaluated comparatively by ...
Design and simulation of an integrated active yaw control system for road vehicles
Tekin, Goekhan; Ünlüsoy, Yavuz Samim (2010-01-01)
In this paper, design methodology and simulation results of an active yaw control system For road vehicles arc presented. The main objectives of the yaw control system arc to estimate the desired yaw behaviour of file vehicle according to the demand of file driver by means of a two degree-of-freedom vehicle model and track this desired yaw rate while considering vehicle steerability parameters. Based on vehicle yaw rate error and vehicle sideslip angle, the controller system applies brake torques to individ...
A numerical study on special truss moment frames with Vierendeel openings
Olmez, Harun Deniz; Topkaya, Cem (Elsevier BV, 2011-04-01)
A two-phase numerical study was undertaken to address some design issues related to special truss moment frames (STMFs). In the first phase, the design approaches for distribution of shear strength among stories were examined. Multistory STMFs sized, based on elastic and plastic analysis, were evaluated from a performance point of view. A set of time history analyses was conducted to investigate performance parameters such as the interstory drift ratio and the plastic rotation at chord member ends. The resu...
A Predictive model for maximum interstory drift ratio (MIDR) and its implementation in probability-based design and performance assessment procedures g
Eroğlu Azak, Tuba; Akkar, Sinan; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Estimating nonlinear deformation demands is important for the implementation of rational seismic design and assessment methodologies to ensure the safe and reliable response of existing and new buildings against seismic action. The nonlinear deformation demand estimations should consider the variability inground motions as well as the uncertainties involved in structural response. This study presents probability-based seismic design and assessment procedures for code-confirming low- and mid-rise reinforced ...
