A study was carried out on the synthesis of FeTi intermetallics from mixed oxide precursors using the method of electro-deoxidation. Fe2O3 and TiO2 mixed in molar proportions of 1:2 were sintered at temperatures ranging from 900 degrees C to 1300 degrees C. The sintered pellet of mixed oxides, connected as cathode, was then electrolyzed in a molten CaCl2 at 900 degrees C using a graphite anode at a potential of 3.2 V. The electrolysis yielded the target composition FeTi in substantial amounts only when the sintering temperature was close to or above 1100 degrees C. The process of deoxidation was followed with the use of interrupted experiments. This has shown that the two-phase structure of Fe2TiO5 and TiO2 in the oxide pellet reacts with the molten salt even before the electrolysis forming CaTiO3, transforming the rest into a mixture of ilmenite (FeTiO3) and a spinel phase (Fe2TiO4). During electrolysis these complex oxides were converted into simpler ones. Fe is the first element to be produced followed by the intermetallic Fe2Ti. FeTi evolves quite late in the electrolysis which seemed to have followed the reduction of CaTiO3. It is shown that interrupted experiments and examination of partially reduced pellets yield considerable information with regard to the sequence of changes that occur during the deoxidation process.

Synthesis of Fe-4.6 wt% B alloy via electro-deoxidation of mixed oxides
Ors, Taylan; Tan, Serdar; Öztürk, Tayfur; Karakaya, İshak (2009-07-01)
Fe-4.6 wt% B alloy was synthesized via electro-deoxidation of the mixed oxide precursor. The oxides, Fe2O3 and B2O3, mixed in suitable proportions were sintered at 900 A degrees C yielding pellets with a two-phase structure; Fe2O3 and Fe3BO6. The sintered pellets, connected as cathode, were then electro-deoxidized in molten CaCl2 or in CaCl2-NaCl eutectic, against a graphite anode at 3.1 V. The electrolysis at 850 A degrees C has successfully yielded a powder mixture of Fe and Fe2B. Sequence of changes duri...
Synthesis of lithium borides by mechanochemical process
Önder, Onur; Önder, Onur; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2009)
The aim of this study was to investigate synthesis of lithium borides by mechanochemical synthesis from oxides. Lithium borides have promising properties in the area of high energy additives and hydrogen storage. Lithium oxide (Li2O), boron oxide (B2O3) and Mg were used to synthesize lithium borides. Experiments were conducted in a planetary ball mill under argon atmosphere. Analyses of the products were done by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Trilithium tetradecaboride (Li3B14) peaks we...
Direct synthesis of Mg-Ni compounds from their oxides
Tan, Serdar; Aydınol, Mehmet Kadri; Öztürk, Tayfur; Karakaya, İshak (2010-08-13)
A study was carried out on the synthesis of Mg-Ni compounds as well as on the extraction of pure Ni and Mg from their oxides using the method of electro-deoxidation. The oxides sintered at 1200 degrees C were in the form of discrete phases NiO and MgO, suitably proportioned to yield Ni, MgNi2, Mg2Ni and Mg. The oxides were electrolyzed at 3.2 V in a eutectic mixture of CaCl2-NaCl solution maintained at a constant temperature (900-600 degrees C), using a graphite anode. The study has shown that NiO rich mixt...
Investigation of single-walled carbon nanotube growth parameters using alcohol catalytic chemical vapour deposition
Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah (2005-10-01)
A detailed parametric study of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) synthesized in powder form and on substrates using the alcohol catalytic chemical vapour deposition (ACCVD) method is reported. As-grown SWNTs were analysed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Raman spectroscopy and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy to obtain structural and electronic information. We found that nucleation and growth of SWNTs occurs within seconds after introduction of ...
Production and characterization of activated carbon from apricot stones
Yağşi, Nezih Ural; Yücel, Hayrettin; Department of Chemical Engineering (2004)
In this study, characterization of activated carbon produced from apricot stones by chemical activation technique using phosphoric acid (H3PO4) as activating agent, at relatively low temperatures (300, 400 and 500oC), was investigated. To produce activated carbon acid impregnated samples were heated; at a heating rate of 20oC/min to the final carbonization temperatures, 300oC, 400oC and 500oC. For each temperature four different carbonization time (90, 120, 180 and 210 min.) were used to produce twelve diff...
