Study on the properties of crosslinking of poly(ethylene oxide) and hydroxyapatite-poly(ethylene oxide) composite

Tincer, T
This study covers the crosslinking of poly-(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and its composite with calcium hydroxyapatite (HA), their mechanical and swelling properties, and morphology. Sheets of the composites of PEO (two different grades with M-v: 5x10(6) and 2x10(5)) and HA and neat PEO were prepared by compression molding. The prepared composite. and. PEO (0.1-mm-thick) sheets were crosslinked with exposure of UV-irradiation in the presence of a photoinitiator, acetophenone (AP). This simple method for crosslinking, induced by UV-irradiation in the presence of AP, yielded PEO with gel content up to 90%. Gel content, equilibrium swelling ratio, and mechanical and morphological properties of the low molecular weight polyethylene oxide (LMPEO)-HA crosslinked and uncrosslinked composites were evaluated. Although the inclusion of HA into LMPEO inhibits the extent of crosslinking, the LMPEO-HA composite with 20% HA by weight shows the highest gel content, with appreciable equilibrium swelling and mechanical strength. The growth of HA in simulated body fluid solutions on fractured surfaces of LMPEO and also LMPEO-HA was found to be very favorable within short times. The dimensional stability of these samples was found to be satisfactory after swelling and deposition experiments. The good compatibility between the filler hydroxyapatite and poly(ethylene oxide) makes this composite a useful tissue-adhesive material. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Polyethylene oxide-hydroxyapatite composite and microporous polyethylene oxide-polymethacrylic acid polymer complex preparation and characterization
Banat, Raid M I; Tinçer, Teoman; Department of Chemistry (2002)
The first part of this study covers the crosslinking of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and its composite with calcium hydroxyapatite (HA) and their mechanical, swelling and morphological properties. Sheets of neat PEO (two different molecular weights) and composites of PEO-HA were prepared by compression molding. The composites and PEO thick sheets were crosslinked with exposure of UV- irradiation in presence of acetophenone (AP) for different periods of time. This simple method of crosslinking, UV-irradiation in...
Investigation of neutron sensitivity of un-doped and Dy-doped CaB4O7 for thermoluminescence applications
Iflazoglu, Sera; Yılmaz, Ayşen; KAFADAR, VURAL EMİR; YAZICI, AHMET NECMEDDİN (2018-09-01)
In this study, thermoluminescence characteristics of un-doped and Dy-doped calcium tetraborate (CaB4O7) compounds are reported. The polycrystalline powder samples of un-doped and Dy-doped CaB4O7 were prepared by a solid-state reaction at high-temperature method. The identification and characteristics of the obtained compounds were determined by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared analysis, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The glow curves ...
Investigation of bismuth doped bioglass/graphene oxide nanocomposites for bone tissue engineering
Pazarçeviren, Ahmet Engin; Tezcaner, Ayşen; Keskin, Dilek; Evis, Zafer (2018-03-01)
In this study, bismuth doped 45S5 nanobioactive bioglass (nBG) and graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites were developed and characterized in terms of microstructural, mechanical, bioactivity and biological properties. Bismuth (Bi) - doped nBG was synthesized by sol-gel method and sintered at 600 degrees C for 2 h. Nanosized GO was homogeneously mixed with Bi doped bioglass at various ratios to prepare nanocomposites. Addition of Bi increased the density of nBG samples while a considerable decrease in density w...
Performance evaluation of Cappadocian tuffs treated with alcohol dispersion of calcium hydroxide nano-particles
Çalışkan, Berkay Barış; Tavukçuoğlu, Ayşe; Saltık, Emine Nevin; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2022-12-08)
In this study, the effect of treatment with alcohol dispersion of calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles on controlling excessive water absorption and capillary water suction properties of Cappadocian tuffs was investigated extensively. For this purpose, two tuff types, Göreme Rock (CYT) and Cappadocian Rose (CPT), obtained from a quarry near Avanos-Nevşehir, were examined. Laboratory tests were conducted concerning their basic physical, hygric, mechanical, microstructural, and mineralogical properties bef...
Examination of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine polymer coated acrylic resin denture base material: surface characteristics and Candida albicans adhesion
Turkcan, Irem; NALBANT, ASUDE DİLEK; Bat, Erhan; AKCA, GÜLÇİN (2018-07-01)
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) polymer coating with various concentrations onto acrylic resin denture base material on surface characteristics such as contact angle and surface roughness and on Candida albicans adhesion which is the major factor of denture stomatitis. Specimens, prepared from heat-polymerized acrylic denture base material, were divided into control and three test groups, randomly. Surfaces of the specimens in test groups we...
