This study examines the short-term behavioral and neural effects of an educational mobile game called MathDash on computational fluency. A portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIR) device was used to monitor changes in the prefrontal cortices of middle school students due to game-based training. Our aim is to explore changes in neural activity at regions in the prefrontal cortex associated with the management of working memory and attentional resources due to arithmetic training with MathDash. Overall, our results indicated that playing MathDash for a short duration of time elicited behavioral improvements as well as functional changes in bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

Evaluating working memory capacity and cognitive load in learning from goal based scenario centered 3D multimedia
Kilic, Eylem; Yıldırım, Zahide (2010-02-08)
The purpose of this study is to investigate working memory capacity and cognitive load in learning from Goal Based Scenario centered 3D multimedia learning environment (GBSc3DM) designed based on Cognitive Load Theory (CLT). GBSc3DM was developed in two versions. In the designed of the first version (+CLT) cognitive load principles were applied. In the second version (-CLT), however, the principles were violated. 47 11(th) grade high school students were selected based on their working memory capacity (WMC)...
Brain Oscillatory Correlates of Visual Short-Term Memory Errors
Mapelli, Igor; Özkurt, Tolga Esat (2019-02-13)
Brain dynamics of memory formation were explored during encoding and retention intervals of a visual working memory task. EEG data were acquired while subjects were exposed to grayscale images of widely known object categories (e.g., "luggage," "chair," and "car"). Following a short delay, two probes were shown to test memory accuracy. Oscillatory portraits of successful and erroneous memories were contrasted. Where significant differences were identified, oscillatory traits of false memories (i.e., when a ...
Anxiety, Motivation, and Self-Confidence in Speaking English During Task Based Activities in Second Life
KAMALI ARSLANTAŞ, TUĞBA; Tokel, Saniye Tuğba (2018-03-01)
This study investigated the contribution of task-based language learning in a 3D virtual world to anxiety, motivation, and self-confidence. The participants were Middle East Technical University preparatory students speaking English as a foreign language, and the 3D environment selected was Second Life, an online virtual world with a global user base. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of task-based language learning in the virtual environment, which had a positive impact on students. Findings sugge...
Factors Influencing the Use of Cognitive Tools in Web Based Learning Environments A Case Study
Özçelik, Erol; Yıldırım, İbrahim Soner (2005-01-01)
High demands on learners in Web-based learning environments and constraints of the human cognitive system cause disorientation and cognitive overload. These problems could be inhibited if appropriate cognitive tools are provided to support learners’ cognitive processes. The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing the use of cognitive tools in Web-based learning environments. This study used data from 31 students who attended a course delivered via the Internet. The students used 9 diffe...
Exploring hand movement dynamics during the Simon task: a mouse tracking study.
İkizoğlu, Hatice Buke; Çakır, Murat Perit; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2019)
Understanding how the cognitive system processes information in real-time is one of the key concerns for researchers in experimental psychology and cognitive science. Several measures and software tools have been proposed to explore different aspects of cognitive processing phenomena. One of these methods, mouse-tracking, allows researchers to collect data about the dynamic unfolding of motor responses by recording the participants’ mouse movements during cognitive tasks. In the present study, we replicated...
