Antalya and Mugla provinces located in southwestern Turkey recently emerged as new magnets for internal migration. In an earlier study, we had pointed out that the dynamics underlying migration to these two provinces differs in many respects from that fueling the population movements to traditional magnets. In this paper, we complement our previous findings by showing how in some other key respects, migration to Antalya and Mugla is similar to migration to traditional destinations. We accomplish this by estimating separate gravity models for the two provinces in question, using both OLS and robust regression methods. We find that migration to Antalya and Mugla is affected by distance from the origin adversely, and by unemployment differential between the origin and destination, past migration from the origin, population sizes at the origin and destination, and natural disasters at the origin, favorably.

Net migration between different settlement types in Turkey, 1985-90
Hamamcı, Nihan Şahin; Gedik, Ayşe; Department of City and Regional Planning (2003)
In the past studies covering 1965-90, it is observed that net migration was from villages and district centers towards province centers. Although the net migration trend throughout the period was almost constant for the villages and the province centers, the role of the district centers changed in later periods. Previously, the district centers were transient settlements in terms of net migration with resultant almost zero net migration. However, in later years, they began to have net out-migration in signi...
Evaluation of alluvial deposits in Gemlik basin in terms of earthquake codes.
Avşar, Ulaş; Doyuran, Vedat; Department of Geological Engineering (2006)
Gemlik County is located in the Marmara Region (NW Turkey), which has been affected by destructive earthquakes sourced from North Anatolian Fault System throughout its history. The bulk of the settlement rests on alluvial deposits of the Gemlik pull-apart basin. So, it is vital to investigate the foundation soils in this basin and the response of them to earthquakes. Many earthquake codes were established by the authorities in different countries of the world to estimate the possible ground shaking and seis...
Europeanization and Turkey‟s regional policy : 1999-2015
Tanrısever, Nazlı Hezar; Kahraman, Sevilay; Department of European Studies (2015)
This thesis seeks to explore the role of the Europeanization process in Turkey’s regional policy since the Helsinki Summit of the European Union (EU) in 1999 when Turkey was accepted as a candidate country for the membership in the EU. Contrary to the views of some experts who claim that the Europeanization process involves a comprehensive transformation of the institutions and policies of the candidate countries in line with the expectations of the EU, Turkey’s regional policy between 1999 and 2015 demonst...
Palaeomagnetic and geochronological evidence for a major middle Miocene unconformity in Soke Basin (western Anatolia) and its tectonic implications for the Aegean region

Cenozoic convergence between the Eurasian and African plates and concurrent slab roll-back processes have produced a progressive extension in back-arc areas, such as the Aegean region and western Anatolia. There is still a long-standing controversy as to whether this was a continuous or stepwise process. To shed light on this controversy and on the driving mechanism of regional extension, we present palaeomagnetic and geochronological results from the Soke Basin located at the southeastern rim of the Izmir-...
Integrated Radiolaria, benthic foraminifera and conodont biochronology of the pelagic Permian blocks/tectonic slices and geochemistry of associated volcanic rocks from the Mersin Melange, southern Turkey: Implications for the Permian evolution of the northern Neotethys
TEKİN, UĞUR KAĞAN; OKUYUCU, CENGİZ; Sayıt, Kaan; Bedi, Yavuz; Noble, Paula J.; Krystyn, Leopold; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal (2019-03-01)
Blocks and tectonic slices within the Mersin Melange (southern Turkey), which are of Northern Neotethyan origin (Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan Ocean (IAE)), were studied in detail by using radiolarian, conodont, and foraminiferal assemblages on six different stratigraphic sections with well-preserved Permian succesions. The basal part of the Permian sequence, composed of alternating chert and mudstone with basic volcanics, is assigned to the late Asselian (Early Permian) based on radiolarians. The next basaltic int...
