Hydraulic model tests of the spillway of Yukar Kalekoy Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) were carried out at Hydromechanics Laboratory of Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara. In order to investigate the flow conditions in the approach channel, over the weir structure, around the spillway piers, along the spillway chute channels and after the flip buckets, and also to observe the performance of the aeration devices, a model of 1/70 length scale was constructed. The model area covers an about 400 m x 450 m section of the Yukar Kalekoy reservoir, the whole spillway structure and a part of the river area of about 150 m x 200 m downstream of the flip buckets. Experiments were carried out at various discharges; QPMF, Q(1000) and Q(100) with fully open radial gates as well as with partly open radial gates at Q(1000). Flow depths, pressure heads of the flows along the spillway structure were measured, cavitation indexes and air concentrations of the flows were determined. From the observations and experimental results, it was concluded that the flow conditions in the approach channel of the spillway, over the weir structure, around the spillway piers, along and after the flip buckets are quite good from the hydraulics point of view. However, the flows were not sufficiently aerated in the spillway chutes, in Channels I and II, after the available aerators presented in the original design of the spillway. After the experiments conducted on the "original model" it was decided that some modifications should be done. In order to improve the performance of the available aerators, the heights of the aerator deflectors were increased by 0.20 m by keeping their lengths in the flow direction almost as before. Experimental Investigation of Flow Conditions over Cambasi Dam Spillway
Altan Sakarya, Ayşe Burcu; Aydın, İsmail; Göğüş, Mustafa; Köken, Mete (2013-09-13)
The entrance conditions, flow around the piers and the pressure distributions along the centerline and the side of the spillway channel for different discharges were investigated for Cambasi dam that will be constructed at the intersection of Kabali and Hamzabey rivers in Ordu District. Hydraulic model of the spillway was constructed at a length scale of 1/20, based on the Froude similarity. Additionally, the water depths and the velocities through the channel sections at different locations were investigat...
Experimental Investigation of the Anti Vortex Devices of Beyhan 1 Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant Water Intake Structure
Göğüş, Mustafa; Altan Sakarya, Ayşe Burcu; Köken, Mete (2016-06-17)
Hydraulic model tests of the intake structure of Beyhan 1 Dam having four units were carried out at Hydromechanics Laboratory of Middle East Technical University, Ankara In order to investigate the flow pattern, and formation, development and dissipation of vortices at the intake structure under different operation conditions of the units, and to determine the types of anti-vortex devices to avoid the air-entraining vortices, a model of 1/29.43 length scale was constructed. The model area covers an about 20...
Investigation Of Waterhammer Problems In Çamlidere Dam - İvedik Water Treatment Plant Pipeline At Various Hydraulic Conditions
Sakabaş, Emre; Bozkuş, Zafer; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Çamlıdere Dam supplies significant portion of the potable water demand of the City of Ankara. Consequently, it is very important that the pipelines extending over 60 km between the dam and the treatment plant at İvedik operate continuously. At present, two composite parallel lines are in operation and construction of a third line is considered for the future. It is the aim of this study to investigate the water hammer problems to be expected under various scenarios and also suggest the safe operation condit...
STEAM-CO-2 FLOODING - AN EXPERIMENTAL-STUDY
GUMRAH, F; OKANDAN, E (1992-01-01)
Research on the use of the combined steam-CO2 injection process was conducted in linear and three-dimensional unscaled laboratory models to determine the performance of limestone reservoirs of the Turkish oil fields, Garzan, Bati Raman and Camurlu. This study was carried out to evaluate the benefits Of CO2 addition to steam on the recovery of 24-degrees-API, 12-degrees-API and 10.6-degrees-API gravity oils.
Flow characterization study and fire experiments in a reduced scaled tunnel
Abuaisheh, Majd Basil Abdel Muhsen; Yozgatlıgil, Ahmet; Pınarcıoğlu, Mehmet Melih; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2019)
This work is an experimental study on the subject of tunnel fires, which is conducted on a ventilated 1/13 scaled tunnel model in the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, Department of Mechanical Engineering of Middle East Technical University. In order to perform the experiments, in the first stage, the tunnel model was completely renovated, and its overall condition was improved to obtain better means of control and accuracy on the experimental measurements. In the second stage of the thesis, a flow characterizati...
