The entrance conditions, flow around the piers and the pressure distributions along the centerline and the side of the spillway channel for different discharges were investigated for Cambasi dam that will be constructed at the intersection of Kabali and Hamzabey rivers in Ordu District. Hydraulic model of the spillway was constructed at a length scale of 1/20, based on the Froude similarity. Additionally, the water depths and the velocities through the channel sections at different locations were investigated for a 1000 year flood discharge. The cavitation index at the centerline and the side of the spillway channel were calculated. Moreover, the impact location of the water jet was investigated. After performing experimental studies, it is concluded that the structure can pass the 1000 year flood discharge and there is no need to have aerators used for preventing cavitation damage.

Experimental Investigation of the Original Project of Yukari Kalekoy Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant Spillway
Göğüş, Mustafa; Altan Sakarya, Ayşe Burcu; Köken, Mete (Elsevier BV; 2016-06-17)
Hydraulic model tests of the spillway of Yukar Kalekoy Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) were carried out at Hydromechanics Laboratory of Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara. In order to investigate the flow conditions in the approach channel, over the weir structure, around the spillway piers, along the spillway chute channels and after the flip buckets, and also to observe the performance of the aeration devices, a model of 1/70 length scale was constructed. The model area covers an abou...
Hydraulic characteristics of tyrolean weirs having steel racks and circular-perforated entry
Şahiner, Halit; Göğüş, Mustafa; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Tyrolean type water-intake structures are commonly used on mountain rivers to supply water to hydropower stations. The amount of water to be diverted from the main channel is the major concern in these kind of structures and should not be less than the design discharge. In this study a physical model of a Tyrolean type water-intake structure was built at the laboratory and the diverted flow from the main channel through the intake structure having steel racks and perforated plates of different types were me...
Computational modelling of free surface flow in intake structures using flow 3D software
Aybar, Akın; Aydın, İsmail; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Intakes are inlet structures where fluid is accelerated to a certain flow velocity to provide required amount of water into a hydraulic system. Intake size and geometry affects the formation of flow patterns, which can be influential for hydraulic performance of the whole system. An experimental study is conducted by measuring velocity field in the hydraulic model of the head pond of a hydropower plant to investigate vortex formation. Vortex strength based on potential flow theory is calculated from the mea...
Investigation Of Waterhammer Problems In Çamlidere Dam - İvedik Water Treatment Plant Pipeline At Various Hydraulic Conditions
Sakabaş, Emre; Bozkuş, Zafer; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Çamlıdere Dam supplies significant portion of the potable water demand of the City of Ankara. Consequently, it is very important that the pipelines extending over 60 km between the dam and the treatment plant at İvedik operate continuously. At present, two composite parallel lines are in operation and construction of a third line is considered for the future. It is the aim of this study to investigate the water hammer problems to be expected under various scenarios and also suggest the safe operation condit...
Experimental Investigation of the Anti Vortex Devices of Beyhan 1 Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant Water Intake Structure
Göğüş, Mustafa; Altan Sakarya, Ayşe Burcu; Köken, Mete (2016-06-17)
Hydraulic model tests of the intake structure of Beyhan 1 Dam having four units were carried out at Hydromechanics Laboratory of Middle East Technical University, Ankara In order to investigate the flow pattern, and formation, development and dissipation of vortices at the intake structure under different operation conditions of the units, and to determine the types of anti-vortex devices to avoid the air-entraining vortices, a model of 1/29.43 length scale was constructed. The model area covers an about 20...
