Quercus brantii Lindley (Fagaceae) is a common oak region of South and East Anatolia. For many civilizations, acorns of Quercus species have been considered as food as well as used in folk-medicine. Phenolic composition of the acorns of Q. brantii was studied by high performance liquid chromatography equipped with a diode array detector. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study regarding a comprehensive separation and identification of the phenolic constituents of Q. brantii acorns. Rapid separation and identification were performed by the reverse phase HPLC-DAD. Identification of the phenolics was also confirmed by UPLC-MS and when necessary structural characterization was accomplished by NMR and FT-IR techniques. As a result, the phenolic composition of the acorns of Q. brantii were realized as gallic acid, methyl gallate, epi-catechin, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, rutin and quercetin in the respective elution order of the RP-HPLC chromatogram.

Estimation of demography and seasonal habitat use patterns of anatolian mouflon (ovis gmelinii anatolica) in Konya Bozdag protection area using distance sampling
Özdirek, Lütfiye; Kence, Aykut; Department of Biology (2009)
The Anatolian mouflon (Ovis gmelinii anatolica) is an endemic ungulate subspecies and of IUCN Vulnerable status that inhabits Konya-Bozdag region located in Central Anatolia. In this thesis, the demography and habitat use of the only natural population of Anatolian mouflon at Konya-Bozdag Provice is studied. Throughout the study, distance sampling techniques, specifically line transect sampling, are used to estimate density, size and growth rate of this population. Sex, age and count data are used to estima...
Pattern of genetic diversity in Turkey oak (quercus cerris l.) populations
Tümbilen Özer, Yeliz; Kaya, Zeki; Department of Biology (2014)
Quercus cerris L. is a native and widely distributed species in Turkey. It is an important element of Anatolian forests and with other oak species constitute 76.4% of broadleafed forests. However, there is little information on the genetic make-up of Turkish populations. In the current study, the genetic diversity of Q. cerris populations sampled within their natural range is assessed with microsatellite loci (SSRs) polymorphism. Thirteen populations were sampled from seven different locations. Four of thes...
Phylogeography and phylogeny of genus Quercus L. (Fagaceae) in Turkey implied by variations of trnT (UGU) -L (UAA) -F (GAA) chloroplast DNA region
Tekpinar, Ayten Dizkirici; AKTAŞ, CANER; Kansu, Çiğdem; DUMAN, HAYRİ; Kaya, Zeki (2021-10-01)
The genus Quercus L. is one of the most abundant and important genera of woody plants in the Northern Hemisphere as well as in Turkey. In the current study which is the most comprehensive study dealing with Turkish oaks, sequence variations of three noncoding regions (trnT(UGU)-L(UAA) IGS, trnL(UAA)intron, trnL(UAA)-F(GAA) IGS) of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) were used for phylogeographic and phylogenetic analysis on 319 individuals representing 23 taxa (17 species). The trnT(UGU)-L(UAA) region was found to be t...
Antioxidant, antimicrobial activity and phytochemical analysis of Pistacia Vera L. skin
Şermet, Muhammed Ömer; Bozoğlu, Faruk; Sağdıçoğlu Celep, A. Gülçin; Department of Biochemistry (2015)
Pistacia vera L. commonly grows in Mediterranean region, mainly in the Southeast of Turkey. Traditionally it is used for the treatment of several diseases such as asthma, rheumatism and hypertension. Pistachios are very rich sources of phenolic compounds however the skins are excluded from the nut as waste. This study was designed to investigate the antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of P. vera skin and to evaluate its phenolic compounds. P. vera skin extracts were prepared in different solvents and meth...
Numerical Modeling of the 1939 Erzincan Earthquake
