Convergence acceleration based on convergence error estimation
Eyi, Sinan (2013-01-01)
New methods are developed for convergence error estimation and convergence acceleration in iteratively solved problems. The convergence error estimation method is based on the eigenvalue analysis of linear systems, but it can also be used for nonlinear systems. Newton's method is used to estimate the magnitude and the phase angle of eigenvalues. The convergence of iterative method is accelerated by subtracting convergence error from the iteratively calculated solutions. The performances of these methods are...
Implementation of ball-center spring analogy mesh deformation technique with CFD design optimization
Yang, Yosheph; Özgen, Serkan (2015-01-01)
© 2015, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. All rights reserved.Mesh deformation technique plays an important role in several numerical simulations and applications including design optimization. This paper aims to implement the developed unstructured mesh deformation technique for CFD Design Optimization around 2-D Airfoils. During the optimization procedure, the newly deformed mesh is generated by using the updated Ball-Center Spring analogy mesh deformation technique. The compar...

Optimization of aeroelastic flapping motion of thin airfoils in a biplane configuration for maximum thrust
Kaya, Mustafa; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Jones, Kevin D.; Platzer, Max F. (2007-01-01)
An aeroelastic flapping motion of thin airfoils in a biplane configuration is optimized for maximum thrust. Airfoils are attached to swing arms by an elastic joint, which is model led by a torsional spring. A spring-mass system is employed for the aeroelastic coupling. The stiffness coefficient and the mass moment of inertia of the airfoil are optimized for maximum thrust. A gradient based optimization method is employed in a parallel computing environment. Unsteady, low speed flows are computed in parallel...
Numerical analyses of flow characteristics in the vicinity of spillway aerators
Kurt, Can; Tokyay Sinha, Talia Ekin; Department of Civil Engineering (2016)
Spillway aerators are used in the spillways that are designed to carry medium to high discharges during their operation. Aerators are aimed to reduce the risk of cavitation in these high velocity flows. Most of the time, design of these aerators are based on physical models and experimental results. However, with the advancement in computational resources, it became possible to analyze the effect of aerators using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To this end, three-dimensional numerical simulations of su...
