A comparative investigation was undertaken for the electrosynthesis and electrochemical properties of three different electroactive polymers having a conjugated core building block, dibenzo[a,c]phenazine. A series of monomers has been synthesized as regards to thiophene based units; thiophene, 3-hexyl thiophene, and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene. The effects of different donor substituents on the polymers' electrochemical properties were examined by cyclic voltammetry. Introducing highly electron-donating (ethylene dioxy) group to the monomer enables solubility while also lowering the oxidation potential. The planarity of the monomer unit enhances pi-stacking and consequently lowering the E-g from 2.4 eV (PHTP) to 1.7 (PTBP). Cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemical measurements revealed that 2,7-bis(4-hexylthiophen-2-ybdibenzo[a,c]phenazine (HTP) and 2,7-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-ybdibenzo[a,c]phenazine (TBP) possessed electrochromic behavior. The colorimetry analysis revealed that while PTBP have a color change from red to blue, PHTP has yellow color at neutral state and blue color at oxidized state. Hence the presence of the phenazine derivative as the acceptor unit causes a red shift in the polymers' absorption to have a blue color. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Icli-Ozkut, Merve; Mersini, Jetmire; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar; CİHANER, ATİLLA (2012-02-15)
Electrochromic polymers called poly(3,4-dihydro-3,3-bis ((naphthalen-1-yl)methyl)-2H-thieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxepine) (PProDOT-Np-2), poly(3,3-dibenzyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-selenopheno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxepine), and poly(3,3-dibenzyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-thieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxepine) were synthesized electrochemically and the effect of substituents and heteroatoms on the electrochromic properties were investigated for the similar systems. All polymers show electrochromism from a colored state when neutralized to transmissive wh...
Effect of surface treatment on electrical conductivity of carbon black filled conductive polymer composites
Koysuren, Ozcan; Yesil, Sertan; Bayram, Göknur (Wiley, 2007-06-05)
Two different types of surface modifiers, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and formamide, were applied to carbon black (CB) particles to lower electrical resistivity of polymer composites prepared by treated CB. Two different matrices, low-density polyethylene and nylon 6, were chosen to compound with surface modified CB. Surface energy of CB was increased by adding amine or amide functional groups during surface treatment of CB. According to electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), chemical modifica...
Effect of different compositions rheological and mechanical properties of epdm rubber
Çavdar, Seda; Usanmaz, Ali; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2007)
In this work, EPDM rubber was compounded with increasing amount of filler (FEF N 550 type carbon black), process oil (saturated mineral oil), vulcanizing agent [di (t-butylperoxy) diisopropyl benzene, i.e., BBPIB] and diene [5-ethylidenebicyclo(2.2.1)-hept-2-ene, i.e., ENB] in order to investigate mechanical and rheological properties. Effect of Increasing amount of filler was investigated by using FEF N 550 type carbon black in 35, 70, 87.5, 105 phr. Decrease in scorch times of vulcanization reactions, ts2...
Synthesis and characterization of a polybenzoxazine from a difunctional amine and a trifunctional phenol
Kaya, Şafak; Tinçer, Teoman; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2009)
Synthesis of a polymer with benzoxazine units in the main chain backbone by a trifunctional phenol, a difunctional amine, and paraformaldehyde was achieved. Thermal, mechanical and spectroscopic characterization and the viscosity properties of the synthesized polymer were studied. In the first step of this study, a fast and feasible method for the synthesis of the benzoxazine precursors was developed since some methods mentioned in the literature about the synthesis of the benzoxazine derivatives last long ...
Effect of Polymers on the Rheological Properties of KCl Polymer Type Drilling Fluid
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (2005-05-01)
In the course of this research, the effect of two polymers (xanthan gum and polyanionic cellulose) on the rheological properties of KCl/polymer type drilling fluids was investigated. Non-Newtonian drilling fluids are conventionally characterized by rheological models (Bingham Plastic, Power Law, Casson, Herchel-Bulkley and Robertson-Stiff). In this research, forty-five KCl/polymer data sets of varying compositions are prepared. Polymer addition to the system has affected the model and caused a variation of ...
