Vertically aligned Si nanowire (NW) arrays fabricated by metal-assisted etching technique were applied to industrial sized (156 mm x 156 mm) multicrystalline Si cells as an anti-reflective (AR) medium. The NW lengths (between 0.15 and 2.2 mu m) were controlled by etch duration from 5 to 50 min. A completely black surface could be observed, demonstrating excellent AR properties in the entire range of the solar spectrum, even without additional anti-reflective coating layer (e.g., SiNx:H). Standard Si solar cell fabrication protocols were followed for both samples with NW arrays and to reference samples textured in standard stain etch solution. Cell parameters have been studied as a function of NW length. Results show that Si NW arrays can be used on multicrystalline Si solar cells as an AR coating. Without applying a superior passivation technique, cell conversion efficiencies are observed to normally degrade with increasing lengths of NW's, such that the highest efficiency in NW samples was resulted from the shortest NW's. It is clear that an effective passivation eliminating recombination along the NW's and optimized doping could further improve the performance of the cell. Structuring the surface of the multi-crystalline wafers with metal assisted etching is shown to be a promising alternative to presently used acid-based texturing processes.

OPTIMIZATION OF SILICON-OXYNITRIDE THIN FILMS FOR CRYSTALLINE SILICON (C-Si) PERC CELL
Canar, Hasan Hüseyin; Turan, Raşit; Erçelebi, Ayşe Çiğdem; Department of Physics (2022-6)
PECVD deposited SiNx has been used in PV industry especially for PERC solar cell as anti-reflection coating (ARC) and passivating layer [1]. However, its limited optical and electrical properties create a barrier for achieving higher solar cell efficiencies. For that reason, an alternative is introduced that is SiOxNy thin film with adjustable refractive index can be tuned as low as SiO2 [2]. In this thesis, deposited SiNx and SiOxNy films were characterized by various measurement methods such as SE, FTIR,...
DRIE process optimization to achieve high aspect ratio for capacitive MEMS sensors
Aydemir, Akın; Akın, Tayfun (null; 2015-09-23)
This paper focuses on process optimization of deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) to achieve high aspect ratio structures, specifically the fabrication of capacitive sensors. Very high aspect ratios up to 70:1 on trenches of 1.0 µm and have been achieved using the Bosch process by optimizing the process parameters. Effects of the process parameters on the etch rate, profile angle, and selectivity to the masking material are investigated in detail. This approach can be easily integrated on conventional ICP equi...
An Alternative Metal-Assisted Etching Route for Texturing Silicon Wafers for Solar Cell Applications
Es, Fırat; Kulakci, Mustafa; Turan, Raşit (2016-03-01)
Metal-assisted etching (MAE) can be used to form antireflective and light-trapping structures on crystalline silicon solar cells. This method has been widely used to form nanowires and nanoholes on their surfaces. In this study, the MAE technique with additional hole-injection mechanisms has been investigated to form surface nanostructures with various shapes. The effect of each chemical's percentage, as well as the etching time, has been studied on the surface geometry and optical performance. The average ...
Instability studies in amorphous silicon based alloys
Özdemir, Orhan; Katırcıoğlu, Bayram; Department of Physics (2004)
The pixel element which is an integrated combination of a p-i-n diode with a thin film transistor (TFT) is used to produce image sensor arrays in scanning and displays technologies, necessitating the deposition of hydrogenated silicon based semiconducting and insulating thin films such as a-Si:H, a-SiNx:H over large area. The widely used techniques to achieve this goal is the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) due to its large area and low temperature (? 300 ?C) abilities. In particular, PECV...
Fabrication of thin crystalline silicon solar cells with advanced light trapping
Hadibrata, Wisnu; Yerci, Selçuk; Turan, Raşit; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2017)
Thin crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells with thickness in the order of few tens of microns offer many attractive applications, such as, electronic wearables, space probes and satellites thanks to their flexibility and light-weight character. However, reducing the thickness of active layer of silicon solar cells leads to poor light absorption within the silicon layer, especially in the near infrared region of the solar spectrum. The poor absorption becomes problematic for thin c-Si solar cells as it caus...
