The effectiveness of the Fenton's reagent (H2O2/Fe2+) in the treatment of carpet dyeing wastewater was investigated under different operational conditions, namely, H2O2 and FeSO4 concentrations, initial pH and temperature. Up to 95% COD removal efficiency was attained using 5.5 g/l FeSO4 and 385 g/l H2O2 at a pH of 3, temperature of 50 degrees C. The H2O2/Fe2+ ratio (g/g) was found to be between 95 and 290 for maximum CO removal. It was noteworthy that, keeping H2O2/Fe2+ ratio constant within the range of 95-290, it became possible to decrease FeSO4 concentration to 1.1 g/l and H2O2 concentration to 96.3 g/l, still achieving nearly the same COD removal efficiency. The relative efficiencies of Fenton's oxidation and coagulation stages revealed that Fenton's coagulation removed organic compounds which were not removed by Fenton's oxidation, indicating that the Fenton's coagulation acted as a polishing step.

Use of Fenton oxidation to improve the biodegradability of a pharmaceutical wastewater

The applicability of Fenton's oxidation to improve the biodegradability of a pharmaceutical wastewater to be treated biologically was investigated. The wastewater was originated from a factory producing a variety of pharmaceutical chemicals. Treatability studies were conducted under laboratory conditions with all chemicals (having COD varying from 900 to 7000 mg/L) produced in the factory in order to determine the operational conditions to utilize in the full-scale treatment plant. Optimum pH was determined...
Effects of aromatic diboronic acid on thermal charateristics of polybenzoxazines based on phenol and aniline
Telli, Aysegul Hisar; Hacaloğlu, Jale (2018-11-01)
In this work, polybenzoxazines based on phenol and aniline were prepared by curing as-synthesized and purified monomers in the presence of aromatic diboronic acid, BDBA. Condensation reactions between BOH groups of diboronic acid and phenolic OH groups of benzoxazine took place during curing only when unreacted phenol, or low mass oligomers were present in the medium. Generation of fragments involving B-O-C groups and significant improvement in thermal characteristics were detected upon curing the as-synthe...
Effect of ZnO morphology on photocatalytic activity determined by no oxidation
Kahraman, Orhun; Üner, Deniz; Department of Chemical Engineering (2019)
In this thesis, the ISO 22197-1 standard test method -for assessing photocatalytic activity by NO oxidation- was used to determine the activity of a series of ZnO samples prepared by a wet chemical synthesis method. The crystallinity of the samples was monitored by XRD and the morphology of the samples was investigated by SEM analysis. NO oxidation measurements revealed that the samples having long range ordered hexagonal morphology shown better photocatalytic activity than those with flake-like morphology....
Investigation of thermal degradation characteristics of polyamide-6 containing melamine or melamine cyanurate via direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry
Isbasar, Ceyda; Hacaloğlu, Jale (2012-01-01)
In this work the changes in thermal degradation characteristics of polyamide 6 (PA6) in the presence of melamine (Me) or melamine cyanurate (MC) were investigated systematically via direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry. Though thermal stability of PA6 was not affected by the presence of flame retardants, the changes in the products and in their distributions were detected. The reaction of carbonyl groups of PA6 with amine groups of melamine was the main cause for the changes in the product distribution. In th...
Effect of cleaning process on the combustion characteristics of two different rank coals
Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Ozbas, K.E. (2001-11-01)
In this research, thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) was used to determine the combustion characteristics of two different rank coals (Tuncbilek and Af in Elbistan) before and after cleaning process. Applying sink-float process cleaned raw coal samples, and optimum-separating densities for each sample was determined using the criteria of "degree of washability". The results indicated that coal cleaning was very effective on Tuncbilek sample due to its high rank. TG/DTG analysis of raw and cleaned samples indicated d...
