In this study, real-time estimation of flow rate and pressure along natural gas pipelines under transient flow condition is aimed. The estimation of the internal states of gas pipelines is based on a recursive discrete data filtering algorithm called the discrete Kalman filter. The state space representation of the transient flow in gas pipelines, which is required for the filtering algorithm, is established by a discrete form of the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE's) describing the characteristics of transient gas flow. The PDE's are discretized by the finite element method and an implicit scheme is employed in order to obtain a simple and adequate algebraic set of equations for the transient gas flow. The state estimator uses these linearized equations and the estimation phase is performed using simulated data imitating measurements. The motivation of this work is to estimate the actual state of the flow with the online data by applying the discrete state-space model of the flow. Therefore, the estimator is developed for a situation where pressure measurements at a few points along the pipe and one flow rate data at the outlet end of the pipe are available. Moreover, to improve the performance of the estimator, the state estimation with a pair of Kalman filter based estimators running in parallel is also proposed. The performance of state estimations is tested on a case study from the literature. The developed estimator can predict the simulated states even with incomplete and/or faulty information on the system parameters.

Parameter study on tracer flow test
Aydın, Hakkı; Akın, Serhat (2019-02-13)
Periodic measurement of flow rate in production wells is essential to monitor performance of geothermal wells and reservoir. Tracerdilution method has been introduced as a reliable, cheap and environment friendly technique to measure mass flow rate and enthalpy intwo phase geothermal systems. In this study, Sodium Fluorescein is used to measure liquid phase mass flow rate in a two phase productionline and in a single phase liquid injection line. The study includes the effect of flow regime and flowrate on t...
Prediction of Non-Darcy flow effects on fluid flow through porous media based on field data
Alp, Ersen; Akın, Serhat; Department of Chemical Engineering (2012)
The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the non-Darcy flow effects on field base data by considering gas viscosity, gas deviation factor and gas density as variables. To achieve it, different correlations from the literature and field data have been combined to Sawyer-Brown Method, thus a contribution has been achieved. Production history of selected gas field has been implemented to a numerical simulator. To find out non-Darcy effects quantitatively, Darcy flow conditions have also been run in...
Modeling of newtonian fluids and cuttings transport analysis in high inclination wellbores with pipe rotation
Sorgun, Mehmet; Parlaktuna, Mahmut; Aydın, İsmail; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2010)
This study aims to investigate hydraulics and the flow characteristics of drilling fluids inside annulus and to understand the mechanism of cuttings transport in horizontal and deviated wellbores. For this purpose, initially, extensive experimental studies have been conducted at Middle East Technical University, Petroleum & Natural Gas Engineering Flow Loop using water and numerous drilling fluids for hole inclinations from horizontal to 60 degrees, flow velocities from 0.64 m/s to 3.05 m/s, rate of penetra...
Simulation of flow transients in liquid pipeline systems
Koç, Gencer; Eralp, O. Cahit; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2007)
Transient flow is a situation where the pressure and flow rate in the pipeline rapidly changes with time. Flow transients are also known as surge and Waterhammer which originates from the hammering sound of the water in the taps or valves. In liquid pipelines, preliminary design parameters are chosen for steady state operations, but a transient check is always necessary. There are various types of transient flow situations such as valve closures, pump trips and flow oscillations. During a transient flow, pr...
Optimal control of gas pipelines via infinite-dimensional analysis
Durgut, I; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal (1996-05-15)
A general optimal control approach employing the principles of calculus of variations has been developed to determine the best operating strategies for keeping the outlet pressure of gas transmission pipelines around a predetermined value while achieving reasonable energy consumption. The method exploits analytical tools of optimal control theory. A set of partial differential equations characterizing the dynamics of gas flow through a pipeline is directly used The necessary conditions to minimize the speci...
