Design of settling basins and related problems encountered in practice
Zaloğlu, Fatma Deniz; Göğüş, Mustafa; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Settling basins are the hydraulic structures used to get sediment-free water from rivers mostly for hydropower systems. Mainly fine sediment is trapped along the settling basins and from time to time the accumulated sediment in the settling basin is flushed away. A wrong design of a settling basin creates lots of problems. In this study based on the hydraulic analysis of a settling basin, the available settling basin design procedures in the literature were reviewed. Some of the settling basins constructed ...
Design implications of analytical and laboratory studies of permanent abandonment plugs
Akgün, Haluk (Canadian Science Publishing, 1999-02-01)
We analyze analytically and numerically the stress distribution along the plug-rock interface and within an axially loaded plug emplaced in a borehole in rock. Experiments show that the interface strength increases with decreasing plug radius and with increasing plug length. Axial strength decreases as a power law of plug radius. An increase in the modulus ratio (ratio of plug modulus to rock modulus) increases the interface strength, until it levels off at a ratio of about 5.0. For short plugs, the tensile...
Design Specifications of Augmentative and Alternative Communication Apps for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder
POLAT, Hamza; Delialioğlu, Ömer (2023-01-01)
The literature has emphasized the positive impact of mobile technologies with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) apps for enhancing the functional communication skills of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Although various AAC apps are available, the system design of such apps presents assorted challenges, particularly for those with ASD in different cultures. Designing useful and engaging apps by considering the affordances of mobile technologies and the characteristics of indi...
