Design Methodologies of a Distributed Propulsion Aircraft
Fouda, Mahmoud; Haq, Rameezul; Naeem, H Nabih; Saeed, Muhammad Asif; Wanyonyi, S Nafuna; Cigal, Nazlıcan; Beker, Can; Yayla, Metehan; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda (null; 2019-09-20)
This paper discusses the conceptual design of a hybrid thin haul air taxi. It presents a design methodology for a distributed propulsive hybrid aircraft highlighting the differences in design procedures between conventional design and hybrid distributed propulsion design. In addition, it demonstrates the impact of both hybridization and distributed propulsion on the reduction of direct operating cost for operators. The aim of the design is to offer a better alternative aircraft to serve the emerging new mar...
Design optimization of rocket nozzles in chemically reacting flows
Yumusak, M.; Eyi, Sinan (2012-07-30)
The objective of this study is to develop a reliable and efficient design tool that can be used in chemically reacting flows. The flow analysis is based on the axisymmetric Euler and the finite rate chemical reaction equations. The finite rate chemistry model includes eight species and eleven reaction equations. These coupled equations are solved by using Newton's method. Both the numerical and the analytical methods are used to calculate the Jacobian matrices. Sensitivities are evaluated by using the adjoi...
Design improvements on mixed flow pumps by means of computational fluid dynamics
Özgen, Onur; Albayrak, Kahraman; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2006)
The demand on high efficiency pumps leads the manufacturers to develop new design and manufacturing techniques for rotodynamic pumps. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software are started to be used during the design periods for this reason in order to validate the designs before the pumps are produced. However the integration process of CFD software into the design procedure should be made carefully in order to improve the designs. In this thesis, the CFD software is aimed to be integrated into the pump ...
Design Studies of Axial Vircator for High Power Microwave Generation
KÜÇÜK, İBRAHİM SEMİH; TİMUR, BÜŞRA; Tanc, Zafer; Demir, Şimşek (2017-09-27)
This paper presents design and simulation results of the cylindrical axial virtual cathode oscillator which is frequently used to damage electronic equipment by generating High Power Microwaves (HPM). Simulations are performed in MAGIC Tool Suite which uses FDTD-PIC algorithm to solve particle beam and field interactions. During the design procedure, AK Gap is changed from 5 mm to 12 mm and the scaling law is verified by simulation results. 9 mm AK gap values are selected as the most suitable one when outpu...
Design optimization of whiffletree systems for wind turbine blade testing
Yeniceli, Süleyman Cem; Kayran, Altan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2014)
In this thesis, the design optimization of a whiffletree system, which is used to simulate the loads for a selected design load case by applying discrete test loads on a wind turbine blade, is performed. Firstly, distributed design loads are calculated for the selected load case by using Microsoft (MS) EXCEL. Then, the test load optimization is performed with the Solver Add-In of the MS EXCEL to find the optimum locations of the load saddles which give the best moment distribution along the blade span accor...
