Nontronitic and limonitic type laterites from "Gordes" nickel deposit located in Western Turkey were subjected to sulfuric acid leaching at atmospheric pressure. Experiments were conducted in order to determine the optimum conditions for agitation leaching by studying various parameters, including time, acid concentration, leaching temperature and particle size. Agitation leach experiments showed that nickel and cobalt could be extracted from both ores. Nickel and cobalt extractions were 96.0% and 63.4% for nontronite: 93.1% and 75.0% for limonite after 24 h of leaching at 95 degrees C, respectively. Overall acid consumptions of ores under the optimum conditions were 669 kg H2SO4/ton dry ore for nontronite and 714 kg H2SO4/ton dry ore for limonite.

High pressure acid leaching of a refractory lateritic nickel ore
MUTLU KAYA, SEVCAN; Topkaya, Yavuz Ali (2011-09-01)
This paper describes the experimental findings of the extraction of nickel and cobalt by high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) of a refractory limonitic nickel laterite ore from the Gordes region of Manisa in Turkey. By optimizing the basic HPAL process parameters: leaching at 255 degrees C with 0.30 sulfuric acid to ore weight ratio with a particle size of 100%-850 mu for 1 h of leaching, it was found that 87.3% of nickel and 88.8% of cobalt present in the ore could be extracted into the pregnant leach soluti...
Extraction of nickel and cobalt from lateritic ores by nitric acid /
Saka, Onur; Topkaya, Yavuz Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2014)
This thesis study is related to the extraction kinetics of nickel and cobalt from lateritic nickel ores from Gördes/Manisa region of Turkey. The experimental studies involved the optimization of nitric acid leaching of nickel laterite ores at atmospheric pressure for high nickel and cobalt extraction. The main parameters optimized after the characterization of laterites were the nitric acid concentration, leaching temperature, duration of leaching and the particle size of the ore sample. The atmospheric lea...
Recovery of copper from oxide copper ore by flotation and leaching
Kiraz, Emirhan; Atalay, Mustafa Ümit; Department of Mining Engineering (2014)
The aim of this study was the recovery of copper from the oxide copper ore by froth flotation and agitating sulphuric acid (H2SO4) leaching. The ore with 4.21% copper grade used in this study was obtained from Çorum-Dangaz region of Turkey. Native copper, cuprite (Cu2O), tenorite (CuO), and malachite (Cu2(OH)2/CO3) were the main copper minerals in the test sample. Quartz, calcite, illite, chlorite, and plagioclase were determined as the main gangue minerals of the sample. The mesh of grind size of copper mi...
Production of hexagonal boron nitride by carbothermic reduction of colemanite-boric oxide mixtures
Kahramansoy, Eylem; Sevinç, Naci; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2011)
Carbothermic production of hexagonal BN by using boric acid and ground colemanite mined from Bigadiç Region in Turkey was investigated by subjecting pellets prepared from B2O3, activated carbon and colemanite mixtures to nitrogen gas at 1500°C. Similar to CaCO3 addition, colemanite addition to the B2O3-C mixtures resulted in higher amounts of h-BN in the final products. As a result of the experiments conducted with colemanite and CaCO3 additions providing the same quantity of CaO to the initial mixtures, si...
Pressure leaching of Çaldağ lateritic nickel ore
Önal, Mehmet Ali Recai; Topkaya, Yavuz Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2013)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the process optimization of combined high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) and mixed hydroxide precipitation (MHP) route for the extraction of nickel and cobalt from Çaldağ lateritic nickel ore. In order to extract nickel and cobalt values into pregnant leach solution (PLS), several process parameters of HPAL including acid load, temperature, leaching duration and particle size were investigated in comparative manner at constant solid concentration and agitation spe...
