Evaluation of rock excavatability and slope stability along a segment of motorway, Pozanti, Turkey

The Ciftehan-Pozanti segment of the Ankara-Pozanti motorway is problematic due to the existence of lithological units with variable character. Seven cut slopes are planned along Km 358+000- Km 364+350 of the proposed motorway. The purpose of this study is to determine engineering geological properties of the rocks exposed along the motorway and to assess the excavatability and stability of the cut slopes. Both field and laboratory studies were carried out during this study. Field studies involved geological mapping, detailed discontinuity surveying and sampling. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine unit weight, point load strength index and shear strength parameters of the discontinuities. In the study area, recrystallized limestone, microgabbro, conglomerate and Quaternary deposits are exposed. However, the cut slopes are located within microgabbro and conglomerate. Hard to very hard ripping with local blasting for the fresh inner part of the rocks is recommended for the excavatability. In two cut slopes wedge failure is expected, whereas in another two slopes both wedge and toppling failures are likely to occur. Based on the field observations and stability analyses of the cut slopes, slope flattening with various angles, wire mesh, and drainage ditches are proposed.

The Ciftehan-Pozanti segment of the Ankara-Pozanti motorway is problematic due to the existence of lithological units with variable characters. Ten cut slopes are planned along Km 352 + 350-Km 358 + 000 of the proposed motorway. The purpose of this study is to determine engineering geological properties of the rocks exposed along the motorway and to assess excavatability and stability of the cut slopes. Planar seismic source characterization models developed for probabilistic seismic hazard assessment of Istanbul
Gülerce, Zeynep; Guner, Baris; Kaymakcı, Nuretdin (Copernicus GmbH, 2017-12-22)
This contribution provides an updated planar seismic source characterization (SSC) model to be used in the probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) for Istanbul. It defines planar rupture systems for the four main segments of the North Anatolian fault zone (NAFZ) that are critical for the PSHA of Istanbul: segments covering the rupture zones of the 1999 Kocaeli and Duzce earthquakes, central Marmara, and Ganos/Saros segments. In each rupture system, the source geometry is defined in terms of fault len...
GIS-based evaluation of the speed limit increase on urban arterial traffic safety in Ankara
Kibar, Funda Ture; Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-06-14)
Setting safe speed limit is very critical and complex phenomenon, which has to be decided based on the road hierarchy that categorizes roads according to their functions and capacities, and poses certain restrictions in the design process. However, this is challenging in urban regions of developing countries, where rapid city growth forces high-speed intercity roads to serve as urban arterials, along which traditional 50 km/h limit is not practically possible. To lower the speed variation (and provide mobil...
Improving the accuracy of the magnetic field integral equation with the linear-linear basis functions
Ergül, Özgür Salih (American Geophysical Union (AGU), 2006-07-18)
[ 1] Basis functions with linear variations are investigated in terms of the accuracy of the magnetic field integral equation (MFIE) and the combined-field integral equation (CFIE), on the basis of recent reports indicating the inaccuracy of the MFIE. Electromagnetic scattering problems involving conducting targets with arbitrary geometries, closed surfaces, and planar triangulations are considered. Specifically, two functions with linear variations along the triangulation edges in both tangential and norma...
Uniform and nonuniform V-shaped planar arrays for 2-D direction-of-arrival estimation
Filik, T.; Tuncer, Temel Engin (American Geophysical Union (AGU), 2009-09-22)
In this paper, isotropic and directional uniform and nonuniform V-shaped arrays are considered for azimuth and elevation direction-of-arrival (DOA) angle estimation simultaneously. It is shown that the uniform isotropic V-shaped arrays (UI V arrays) have no angle coupling between the azimuth and elevation DOA. The design of the UI V arrays is investigated, and closed form expressions are presented for the parameters of the UI V arrays and nonuniform V arrays. These expressions allow one to find the isotropi...
