Natural convection from plate-fin heat sinks in both horizontal and slightly inclined from horizontal orientations is studied for the inclination angles of +/- 60 degrees, +/- 75 degrees, +80 degrees, +/- 85 degrees, +/- 90 degrees from the vertical. A set of correlations is obtained for both upward (-) and downward (+) facing horizontal cases. The correlations are tested for validity by using large sets of experimental data from literature. By varying the direction of gravitational acceleration for several upward and downward inclinations, the phenomenon is investigated for the purpose of determining the flow structures forming in and around the heat sinks. The chimney flow structures forming in the upward facing horizontal case are investigated. The extents of validity of the horizontal case correlations for the average Nusselt number are investigated by modifying the dimensionless body force terms with the sine of the inclination angle. It is observed that the modified correlations are valid in ranges, from -60 degrees to -90 degrees (upward) and +80 degrees to +90 degrees (downward). A complete set of Nusselt number correlations covering all possible inclination angles is suggested and shown to be accurate with less than 20% error for the cases with fin spacing values close to the determined optima.

Effect of design and operating parameters on the thermal performance of aluminum flat grooved heat pipes
Alijani, Hossein; Cetin, Barbaros; Akkuş, Yigit; Dursunkaya, Zafer (Elsevier BV, 2018-03-05)
Four aluminum flat grooved heat pipes with groove widths of 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 mm are fabricated and the effect of filling ratio on the thermal performance is experimentally studied for four different heat flux values of 2.1, 3.2, 4.2 and 5.3 W/cm(2). An optimum filling ratio corresponding to each heat flux is determined where the heat pipe has the best thermal performance. Thermal performance of the heat pipes are evaluated using three indicators: (i) the temperature difference between the heat source a...
Natural convection simulations and numerical determination of critical tilt angles for a parallel plate channel
Tarı, İlker (Elsevier BV, 2010-04-01)
Three dimensional laminar unsteady natural convection flow of incompressible air between two inclined parallel plates is analyzed by using spectral methods. The channel that is periodical in streamwise and spanwise directions is heated from below. The motivation behind the study is to perform simulations for a domain representing a bottom heated, open ended and inclined enclosure that appears mostly in solar energy applications The governing equations are solved using a pseudospectral solver in order to obt...
Natural convection heat transfer from inclined plate-fin heat sinks
Tarı, İlker (2013-01-01)
The steady-state natural convection from heat sinks with parallel arrangement of rectangular cross section vertical plate fins on a vertical base are numerically investigated in order to obtain a validated model that is used for investigating inclined orientations of a heat sink. Taking a previous experimental study as a basis, aluminum heat sinks with two different practical lengths are modeled. The models and the simulation approach are validated by comparing the flat plate heat sink results with the avai...
Comparative study of yield-power law drilling fluids flowing through annulus
Ozbayoglu, M. E.; Omurlu, C. (Informa UK Limited, 2007-01-01)
An exact solution for calculating the frictional pressure losses of yield-power law (YPL) fluids flowing through concentric annulus is proposed. A solution methodology is presented for determining the friction factor for laminar and nonlaminar flow regimes. The performance of the proposed model is compared to widely used models as well as the experimental results of 10 different mud samples obtained from the literature. The results showed that the proposed model could estimate the frictional pressure losses...
Surface-to-bed heat transfer for high-density particles in conical spouted and spout-fluid beds
Yaman, Onur; Külah, Görkem; KÖKSAL, MURAT (Elsevier BV, 2019-02-01)
Bed-to-surface heat transfer experiments from a vertically submerged cylindrical surface were conducted in laboratory-scale (D-c = 25 cm) conical spouted and spout-fluid beds at two different conical angles (31 degrees and 66 degrees) in the high particle density range (2500 kg/m(3) <= sigma(p) <= 6000 kg/m(3)). The effects of the bed design parameters (conical angle and inlet diameter of spouting gas entrance) and operating conditions (static bed height, particle size, density, and spouting and fluidizatio...
