Materializing Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM), numerical modeling of discrete internal cracks, namely central bursts, in direct forward extrusion process is presented. Accordingly, in a thermodynamically consistent setting, a local Lemaitre variant damage model with quasi-unilateral evolution is coupled with hyperelastic-plasticity. The formulations are constructed in the principal axes where simultaneous local integration schemes are efficiently developed. To this end, the framework is implemented as ABAQUS/VUMAT subroutine to be used in an explicit FE solution scheme, and utilized in direct forward extrusion simulations for bearing steel, 100Cr6. Discontinuous cracks are obtained with the element deletion procedure, where the elements reaching the critical damage value are removed from the mesh. The periodicity of the cracks shows well accordance with the experimental facts. The investigations reveal that, application of the quasi-unilateral conditions together with the crack closure parameter has an indispensable effect on the damage accumulation zones by determining their internal or superficial character. Numerical and Experimental Determination of the Residual Stress State in Multipass Welded API 5L X70 Plates
Garipova, Nuriya; Batıgün, Caner; Gür, Cemil Hakan (2014-01-01)
Residual stress distributions in multipass welded API 5L X70 steel plates were determined by numerical and experimental methods. SYSWELD finite element software was used for numerical simulations. Microstructure variations were also considered for calculation of residual stresses. The continuous cooling transformation diagram was obtained via JMatPro software. The results showed that residual stress distribution is sensitive to number of weld passes, and microstructure changes. The simulation results were c...
Application of spring analogy mesh deformation technique in airfoil design optimization
Yang, Yosheph; Özgen, Serkan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2015)
In this thesis, an airfoil design optimization with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis combined with mesh deformation method is elaborated in detail. The mesh deformation technique is conducted based on spring analogy method. Several improvements and modifications are addressed during the implementation of this method. These enhancements are made so that good quality of the mesh can still be maintained and robustness of the solution can be achieved. The capability of mesh deformation is verified by...
Modeling of the nonlinear behavior of steel framed structures with semi rigid connections
Sarıtaş, Afşin; Özel, Halil Fırat (null; 2015-07-21)
A mixed formulation frame finite element with internal semi-rigid connections is presented for the nonlinear analysis of steel structures. Proposed element provides accurate responses for spread of inelasticity along element length by monitoring the nonlinear responses of several crosssections, where spread of inelasticity over each section is captured with fiber discretization. Each material point on the section considers inelastic coupling between normal stress and shear stress. The formulation of the ele...
Formulation and Implementation of a New Porous Plasticity Model
Yalçınkaya, Tuncay; Erdoğan, Can; Tandoğan, İzzet Tarık (Elsevier BV; 2019-01-01)
A new rate independent porous plasticity model is proposed for the modeling of ductile damage initiation due to void growth in metallic materials. The model is based on a simple yield description which includes two porosity functions that affect both deviatoric and hydrostatic stress evolution. The current version of the model predicts damage solely due to void growth and it should be extended to include the void initiation and coalescence criteria. The numerical examples study the performance of the develo...
Experimental and numerical analysis of a bolted connection in steel transmission towers
Baran, Eray; Sen, Gokmen; Draisawi, Ammar (2016-06-01)
This paper presents an integrated numerical and experimental study on a bolted splice connection used in main legs of steel lattice transmission towers. At specific locations, where the number of angle sections in built-up cross section of main leg members changes, the complex geometry around the connection region results in eccentricities in the load path and indirect load transfer. Such complex configurations and uncertainties in the load path have led to overdesigned connections with increased number of ...
