CORRELATION OF MICROSTRUCTURE AND FAILURE INITIATING SITES IN AN AISI M2 HIGH-SPEED STEEL USING VICKERS INDENTATION

1990-01-01
In this study, the relation of crack initiation and propagation to microstructure was shown in an AISI M2 high-speed steel using Vickers hardness indentation. Observations were carried out on the cracks generated from the corners of the square pyramid indentation in both the as-quenched, the quenched and tempered specimens. It is shown that cracks are nucleated from the corners of the indentation by either cleavage of the carbide or by decohesion between the carbide and the matrix, depending on the size of the carbide. A nucleated crack propagates by tearing of the martensitic matrix between the cracked carbides ahead of the indentation corner. It is shown that the crack resistance of the M2 steel is determined by the toughness of the matrix rather than the size and distribution of the carbides in the matrix.

The effect of double austenitization on the microstructure and toughness of AISI M2 high speed steel
Ögel, Bilgehan (1998-06-01)
In this study, the effect of double austenitization on microstructure and toughness of AISI M2 high speed steel was investigated. For double austenitization treatment, the specimens, which are hardened initially at 1220 degrees C and quenched in air, were hardened for a second time in the temperature range 1150 - 1050 degrees C. For comparison purposes, another set of specimens is austenitized singly in the temperature range 1150 - 1050 degrees C. Tempering process was carried out between 500 - 640 degrees ...
Estimation of lining thickness around circular shafts
Ozturk, H; Unal, E (2001-06-22)
In this paper, the broken zone developing, around a circular mine shafts and lining pressure is estimated by integrating the results of numerical analysis and the "rock-load height" equation derived from empirical analysis. During numerical modelling studies, the computer program FLAC(2D) was utilized. In order to estimate equivalent Mohr failure Envelope from the generalised Hoek Brown failure criterion, a new FISH function was written within FLAC(2D). Parametric studies were carried out by considering mRM...
Experimental and numerical analysis of a bolted connection in steel transmission towers
Baran, Eray; Sen, Gokmen; Draisawi, Ammar (2016-06-01)
This paper presents an integrated numerical and experimental study on a bolted splice connection used in main legs of steel lattice transmission towers. At specific locations, where the number of angle sections in built-up cross section of main leg members changes, the complex geometry around the connection region results in eccentricities in the load path and indirect load transfer. Such complex configurations and uncertainties in the load path have led to overdesigned connections with increased number of ...
Effect of synthetic fibers on flexural performance of normal and high performance concrete
Şengün, Emin; Alam, Burhan; Yaman, İsmail Özgür (null; 2016-09-19)
Macro synthetic fiber incorporated concretes are increasingly used for concrete applications owing to their high energy absorption capacity, toughness and impact resistance. The aim of this study is twofold; first to investigate the effects of synthetic fibers on the flexural performance and thus the energy absorption characteristics of normal and high performance concrete (HPC), and secondly to investigate the effects of specimen size. For this experimental study, eight concrete groups were designed using ...
Investigation of unsteady wake-separated boundary layer interaction using particle-image-velocimetry
Uzol, Oğuz; Cranstone, Alex; Hodson, Howard (2007-05-17)
The current paper presents an experimental investigation of the interaction between unsteady wakes and the separated boundary layer on the suction side of an ultra-high-lift low-pressure turbine airfoil. Two-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements of the unsteady boundary layer over the T106C LP turbine profile were performed in a low speed linear cascade facility, at selected phases of passing wakes. The wakes are created by moving cylindrical bars across the inlet of the test section. V...
