Becoming mature enough to be used for improving the quality of life, wireless sensor network technologies are considered as one of the key research areas in computer science and healthcare application industries. The pervasive healthcare systems provide rich contextual information and alerting mechanisms against odd conditions with continuous monitoring. This minimizes the need for caregivers and helps the chronically ill and elderly to survive an independent life, besides provides quality care for the babies and little children whose both parents have to work. Although having significant benefits, the area has still major challenges which are investigated in this paper. We provide several state of the art examples together with the design considerations like unobtrusiveness, scalability, energy efficiency, security and also provide a comprehensive analysis of the benefits and challenges of these systems.

Wireless Communication Aspects in the Internet of Things: An Overview
ULUŞAR, ÜMİT DENİZ; Celik, Gurkan; Al-Turjman, Fadi (2017-10-12)
Recent advances in technology propelled the development of resource constrained tiny devices and the concept of Internet of Things (IoT). Potential applications spanning various fields of science from environmental to medical have been emerged. Different architectures, routing protocols, performance issues and goals have been suggested. In this work, we review fundamental concepts, recent developments and critical design factors under IoT-specific constraints and objectives such as energy efficiency and env...
Packet Arrival Analysis in Wireless Sensor Networks
Doddapaneni, Krishna; Shah, Purav; Ever, Enver; Tasiran, Ali; Omondi, Fredrick A.; Mostarda, Leonardo; Gemikonakli, Orhan (2015-03-27)
Distributed sensor networks have been discussed for more than 30 years, but the vision of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has been brought into reality only by the rapid advancements in the areas of sensor design, information technologies, and wireless networks that have paved the way for the proliferation of WSNs. The unique characteristics of sensor networks introduce new challenges, amongst which prolonging the sensor lifetime is the most important. WSNs have seen a tremendous growth in various applicati...
Using Wireless Sensor Network Technologies for Elder and Child Care: An Application Architecture Proposal
Alemdar, Hande (2009-01-01)
For the last decade wireless sensors, especially multi-modal sensor technologies have been developing for supporting healthcare services for elderly and children. The main motivation behind this is the fact that the world's expectations for an average lifetime is getting longer, thus increasing the costs of healthcare. The need for technological support on the subject has led wireless sensor technologies and sophisticated electronics to become within the reach of average users and research effort on the sub...
Energy-Aware Data Delivery Framework for Safety-Oriented Mobile IoT
Al-Turjman, Fadi (2018-01-01)
The proliferation of wireless multimedia sensor networks has given rise to intelligent transportation systems as a mobile data-sharing model. This vision can be extended under the umbrella of the mobile Internet of Things to include versatile resources, such as smartphones, radio frequency identification tags, and sensors on roads that can be utilized in emergency situations. The facilitation of such a vision faces key challenges in terms of interoperability, resource management and energy consumption. In t...
Wireless networking in tunnelling projects
Nielsen, Yasemin; Koseoglu, Ozan (Elsevier BV, 2007-05-01)
Emerging collaborative technologies and working methods often require tremendous engineering and organisational efforts for successful implementation of information and communication technologies (ICTs). According to a research conducted in Turkish construction industry, most of the problems that occur during the construction phase are due to lack of co-operation and communication between designers and contractors and lack of prompt expert decisions during on-site engineering. Similar to any major construct...
