A Joint Framework for Urban Morphology and Design

2011-12-01
MARSHALL , STEPHEN
Çalışkan, Olgu
This paper proposes a joint framework for relating urban morphology and design to each other, which can help to explain how and why these can be considered as distinct yet connected. The paper locates urban morphology and urban design – as products and processes – within a framework based on the distinction between the physical fabric and the abstract domain, in relation to time order. This helps clarify and explain the nature and signi ficance of the essential relationship between urban morphology and design. The paper concludes with suggestions for the be er integration of morphology and design.

The Role of Metacognition in Facilitating Conceptual Change
Yürük, Nejla; Beeth, Michael E; Özdemir, Ömer Faruk (2003-03-31)
This paper describe the intertwined nature of metacognition and conceptual change and proposes a taxonomy that classifies the types of metacognitive knowledge and activities that are likely to influence the change in students' conceptions. The initial conceptual change model is introduced to provide background and context for the theoretical argument, and a summary of the other theoretical approaches is drawn to explain the change in students' conceptions. The definition of metacognition is presented along ...
Kentsel Dokuların Dolaşım Sistemlerinin İşleyişindeki Rolü
Zorlu, Fikret (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2008)
An inspection approach for conceptual models in notations derived from UML: A case study
Tanrioever, Oezeguer; Bilgen, Semih (2007-11-09)
This paper presents an overview of a proposed framework for improving the quality of conceptual models developed in notations derived from UML. To this aim, wellness properties of a UML model are described shortly. Through a case study, we show that an ad hoc inspection process in accordance with this framework can be defined and performed depending on the conceptual modeling notation and typical real models. This study showed us that the application of the defined inspection process, which adopts concepts ...
THE EFFECTS OF CHILDREN'S PARTICIPATION IN PLANNING AND DESIGN ACTIVITIES ON THEIR PLACE ATTACHMENT
Severcan, Yücel Can (2015-12-01)
This paper proposes a theoretical framework for understanding the relationship between individuals' place attachment and their engagement in placemaking. It then presents a field study examining whether and to what extent the involvement of children ages nine to 11 in urban planning and design activities affects their attachment to their blocks, neighborhoods, and cities. Data were collected by involving approximately 240 children from six disadvantaged neighborhoods in Istanbul, Turkey, in a participatory ...
Mimarların Halkın Dilini Anlamasına Yönelik Bir Çalışma; Mimar Ve Mimar Olmayan Benzerliği
Özbudak Akca, Y. Berivan; Erdoğan, Ebru; Akalın, Aysu (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2015-12-8)
This study discusses connotative meaning, which is a design input, and how it is understood by architects and laypersons. The study also examines layperson's value judgments and the factors that influence them. Studies of architects and laypersons have mainly attempted to acquire information from laypeople so that architects can use it to estimate their opinions. If architects know how connotative meanings affect laypersons, they can make better design decisions. For all these reasons, the author examined t...
