Thermal analysis can be utilized to reveal the total graphite nucleated in cast irons by correlating the integrated areas under the cooling curves and graphite areas of a cast iron sample measured using an image analyzer. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of varying amounts of inoculants on the thermal analysis of grey cast iron by observing the changes in the shape of the cooling curves. DeltaT values, i.e. the observed undercooling before recalescence, can be correlated to the changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties which is a consequence of inoculation. In this study, a series of gray cast iron alloys produced by a cast iron foundry were used as test alloys and 'thermal analysis' was performed using a "multilab thermal analyzer" device to record and analyze the cooling curves. Afterwards, the areas under the cooling curves, particularly the portion belonging to graphite formation, were integrated after curve fitting of these segments. The areas were plotted against the total graphite areas measured by the image analyzer. Casting trials and thermal analysis were undertaken at a local foundry which produces automotive parts.

A study of wet oxidized A1(x)Ga(1-x)As for integrated optics
Bek, Alpan; Champlain, JG; Naone, R (1999-04-01)
An investigation of wet oxidized Al-x Ga1-xAs layers in integrated optical applications is reported, Refractive index and thickness shrinkage of wet oxidized AI(x)Ga(1-x)As layers are measured using spectroscopic ellipsometry, A Cauchy fit to the refractive index is found in the wavelength range between 0.3 and 1.6 mu m. The refractive index at 1.55 mu m is found to be 1.66+/-0.01 with little dispersion around 1.55 mu m. Very low loss single-mode waveguides with metal electrodes showing very low polarizatio...
The Analysis of Inhomogeneous Barrier Height in In/SnTe/Si/Ag Diode
Güllü, Hasan Hüseyin; YILDIZ, DİLBER ESRA (2018-12-01)
SnTe thin film layer was fabricated by magnetron sputtering technique on n-Si substrate, and the electrical properties of the In/SnTe/Si/Ag diode structure was investigated by using temperature dependent forward bias current-voltage (I-V) measurements. The main diode parameters were calculated according to the thermionic emission (TE) model and they were found in an abnormal behavior with change in temperate in which zero-bias barrier height (Phi(B0)) increases and ideality factor (n) decreases with increas...
The synthesis and characterization of aluminum loaded SBA-type materials as catalyst for polypropylene degradation reaction
Obali, Zeynep; Sezgi, Naime Aslı; Doğu, Timur (2011-12-01)
The performance of pure and aluminum containing SBA-type catalysts prepared using different aluminum sources and different Al/Si ratios were investigated in the polypropylene degradation reaction using a thermogravimetric analyzer. For the synthesis of catalysts, aluminum isopropoxide and aluminum sulphate were used as the aluminum sources. Synthesized materials had high surface areas and exhibited nitrogen adsorption isotherms of type IV. EDS results showed that the aluminum incorporation into the structur...
The Characterization of a Tar Sand Sample Using Differential Scanning Calorimeters
Senguler, I.; Kök, Mustafa Verşan (2013-01-01)
In this study, non-isothermal kinetics and a thermal analysis tar sand sample is studied by differential scanning calorimeter and pressurized differential scanning calorimeter. Differential scanning calorimeter and pressurized differential scanning calorimeter curves revealed two reaction regions in the temperature range of 20-600 degrees C. Effect of pressure was also studied in order to see the thermal behavior of a tar sand sample under different elevated pressures. Two different kinetic methods (ASTM an...
The effect of magnisium to sulfur ratio on the graphite morphology of graphite cast iron produced at differrent section thicknesses
ELMABROUK, Omar; ERFAN, Osama M.; Kalkanlı, Ali (2011-09-18)
This paper is concerned with the investigation of the effect of magnesium to sulfur ratio on the graphite morphology and estimation of the ranges of this ratio use to produce graphite cast iron at different section sections. The main factors affecting shape of graphite cast iron are the metallurgical structures and the section thicknesses. Cast iron of different shapes of graphite particles directly affect its thermo-mechanical properties. The nodular shape of these graphite particles such as in ductile cas...
