The key concern of this study is to discuss the reliable acoustical metrics for analyzing particular sound fields within monumental multi-domed sacred spaces with an emphasis on multiple sound energy decay formation. The potential of such structures in featuring non-exponential sound energy decay characteristics necessitates new formulation of sound decay indicators in understanding of their sound fields. The early and late energy decay components within non-exponential sound energy decays can have a unique contribution to the interior acoustic quality. These acoustical features can also provide the functional and spiritual acoustical needs of monumental sacred spaces. Suleymaniye Mosque and Hagia Sophia, two major monuments of Istanbul World Heritage Site, are examined in this regard. Field measurements are the main method of data collection. Over collected room impulse responses, relevant acoustical predictors including decay rates and decay times are computed by applying Bayesian decay parameter estimation. Analysis results disclose double or triple decay formations in both structures. Authors argue that, the detection of multiple sound energy decays in analyzed structures sets out a new vision for room acoustics studies of sacred spaces and for multi-domed monuments. Thus, implementation of new metrics, namely multiple slope decay parameters to replace classical room acoustics indicators, is recommended and discussed in light of the outcomes of this study.

Assessment of non-exponential sound energy decays within multi-domed monuments by numerical and experimental methods
Sü Gül, Zühre; Tavukçuoğlu, Ayşe; Çalışkan, Mehmet; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2015)
The key concern of this study is to investigate sound fields of single space superstructures sheltered with multiple-domes, in terms of their potential for featuring non-exponential sound energy decay characteristics. In this framework, Süleymaniye Mosque and Hagia Sophia Museum are selected as cases for investigating the effects of different material use and volumetric contribution on multi-slope decay formation. Methodology involves joint use of in-situ acoustical measurements and acoustical simulations. ...
Determination of groundwater threshold values: A methodological approach
Bulut, Onur F.; Duru, Burcu; Cakmak, Ozgur; Gunhan, Ozgur; Dilek, Filiz Bengü; Yetiş, Ülkü (Elsevier BV, 2020-04-20)
This article is concerned with the establishment of natural background levels and threshold values for naturally-occurring parameters in groundwaters in the absence of relevant and accurate long-term spatial data. A new approach was developed and exemplified, adopting the groundwaters of the Gediz River Basin, Turkey, as a case study. The available groundwater monitoring data was from a one-year seasonal water quality monitoring campaign. The approach used combines pre-selection, selection and statistical e...
Assessment of buried pipeline performance during the 1999 Duzce Earthquake
Yargıcı, Volkan; Çetin, Kemal Önder; Yücemen, M. Semih; Department of Civil Engineering (2003)
The goal of this study is to develop probabilistically based empirical correlations for seismic performance assessment of buried pipelines. Within the scope of these research efforts, pipeline performance case histories have been compiled from Duzce city after Duzce earthquake. The characteristics of Duzce water supply and distribution system with the earthquake damage on the system were studied. Correlations of the damage patterns with the water distribution system, earthquake and geotechnical characterist...
Investigation of fluid rheology effects on ultrasound propagation
Özkök, Ozan; Uludağ, Yusuf; Department of Chemical Engineering (2012)
In this study, a mathematical model is developed for investigating the discrete sound propagation in viscoelastic medium to identify its viscoelastic properties. The outcome of the model suggests that pulse repetition frequency is a very important parameter for the determination of relaxation time. Adjusting the order of magnitude of the pulse repetition frequency, the corresponding relaxation time which has similar magnitude with pulse repetition frequency is filtered while the others in the spectrum are d...
