The goal of this study is to develop probabilistically based empirical correlations for seismic performance assessment of buried pipelines. Within the scope of these research efforts, pipeline performance case histories have been compiled from Duzce city after Duzce earthquake. The characteristics of Duzce water supply and distribution system with the earthquake damage on the system were studied. Correlations of the damage patterns with the water distribution system, earthquake and geotechnical characteristics have been developed. Moreover spatial distributions of the earthquake effects havebeen transferred into Geographic Information System (GIS) format. As a result of these studies, it was intended to define the seismic, geotechnical and structural parameters which may explain the spatial variability of the observed seismic pipeline hazard. For the development of such correlations, a maximum likelihood framework for the probabilistic assessment of seismically induced buried pipeline performance is described. A database, consisting of postearthquake field observations of buried pipeline performance after Duzce earthquake in conjunction with in-situ أindexؤ test results, is used for the development of probabilistically based seismic pipeline performance correlations. As a result of careful processing of available data, the variables of the problem are selected as: liquefaction susceptibility of soil, thickness of soft soil layer if it exists, peak ground acceleration and estimated ground deformations. A limit state function is defined in terms of these variables. Repairs on the pipeline system due to earthquake are compiled with the surrounding soil and earthquake parameters and the correlations of pipeline performances with the mentioned variables are determined. Different sets of fragility curves are developed for seismic pipeline performance problem, representing

Probabilistic seismic hazard assessment of Eastern Marmara and evaluation of Turkish Earthquake Code requirements
Ocak, Recai Soner; Gülerce, Zeynep; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the seismic hazard in the Eastern Marmara Region using improved seismic source models and enhanced ground motion prediction models by probabilistic approach. Geometry of the fault zones (length, width, dip angle, segmentation points etc.) is determined by the help of available fault maps and traced source lines on the satellite images. State of the art rupture model proposed by USGS Working Group in 2002 is applied to the source system. Composite reoccurren...
Comparison of Frequency Analysis with Density Based Clustering in Evaluating Extreme Streamflows
Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin(2018-12-31)
Analysis of streamflow data has significant importance concerning sustainable use of water resources, planning supply of short and long term demands. Streamflow, unlike many other completely random variables, is a dependent variable which is closely related to both meteorological (such as precipitation, temperature) and catchment characteristics (such as land use and soil type). Thus inter-dependencies should be taken into consideration while analyzing streamflow. Besides this, while analyzing streamflow da...
Evaluation of novel thermo-resistant Micractinium and Scenedesmus sp for efficient biomass and lipid production under different temperature and nutrient regimes
Sonmez, Cagla; ELÇİN, EVRİM; Akin, Dilan; Öktem, Hüseyin Avni; Yücel, Ayşe Meral (2016-07-01)
Despite the vast interest in microalgae as feedstock for biodiesel production, relatively few studies examined their response to diurnal temperature fluctuation. Here, we describe biomass and lipid productivities and fatty acid profiles of thermo-resistant Micractinium sp. and Scenedesmus sp. grown in batch cultures in a laboratory set-up that mimics a typically warm summer day in Central Anatolia with a 16-h light temperature of 30 degrees C and 8-h dark temperature of 16 degrees C (30 degrees C (day)/16 d...
Probabilistic seismic hazard assessment for east anatolian fault zone using planar source models
Menekşe, Akın; Gülerce, Zeynep; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
The objective of this study is to perform probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) using planar seismic source characterization models for East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) and to update the design ground motions to be used in the region. Development of planar seismic source models requires the definition of source geometry in terms of fault length, fault width, fault plane angles and segmentation points for each segment and associating the observed seismicity with defined fault systems. This complicat...
Probabilistic seismic hazard assessment of Eastern Marmara Region
Gülerce, Zeynep (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-10-01)
The objective of this study is to evaluate the seismic hazard in Eastern Marmara Region using an improved probabilistic seismic hazard assessment methodology. Two significant improvements over the previous seismic hazard assessment practices are accomplished in this study: advanced seismic source characterization models in terms of source geometry and recurrence relationships are developed, and improved global ground motion models (NGA-W1 models) are employed to represent the ground motion variability. Plan...
