Effect of clinker phase distribution within cement particles on properties of a hydrating cement paste

2013-01-01
SEM/X-ray images of cements in the Virtual Cement and Concrete Testing Laboratory were analyzed and used in simulations to investigate the effect of spatial distribution of clinker phases within particles on hydration and resulting properties. Percentages of the clinker phases actually consumed in the total hydrated clinker at any time during hydration ('active phase content's) are different than those measured on the unreacted powder ('overall phase content's), which may weaken predictions of the overall rate of hydration and property (heat and strength) development especially at early ages, and when hydration is incomplete. A demonstration in 2D of how 'active phase content's differ from the measured 'overall phase content's at different degrees of hydration, is provided as well as one in 3D, using a hydration model, for one of the cements. The influence of phase distribution on hydration and property development is discussed by comparing four different cases/microstructures hydrated under the same model conditions. For the same phase contents and fineness, differences in distribution have a significant effect on early-age properties but a lesser effect at later ages.

Effect of approach channel shape on theformation of vortices at single-horizontal intakes
Sönmez, Can Metin; Göğüş, Mustafa; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
In an experimental setup of a water intake structure composed of a reservoir-pipe system, the formation of air-entraining vortices under symmetric flow conditions were investigated for different approach channel shapes. In the first set of the experiments the approach channel walls were kept parallel to each other and be perpendicular to the head-wall of the intake structure. In the following sets of the experiments these walls were located at different angles to the head-wall. A series of experiments were ...
Effect of molecular and electronic structure on the light-harvesting properties of dye sensitizers
Mete, E.; Üner, Deniz; Cakmak, M.; Gulseren, O.; Ellialtoglu, S. (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2007-05-24)
The systematic trends in structural and electronic properties of perylenediimide (PDI)-derived dye molecules have been investigated by DFT calculations based on the projector-augmented wave (PAW) method including gradient-corrected exchange-correlation effects. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations have been performed to study the visible absorbance activity of these complexes. The effect of different ligands and halogen atoms attached to PDI were studied to characterize the light-ha...
Effects of anisotropy of ferrite coating on the radiation characteristics of a cylindrical conductor excited by elementary sources
Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem (Informa UK Limited, 1998-01-01)
In this paper, radiation characteristics of an arbitrarily oriented source in an anisotropic multilayered cylindrical structure are investigated by using the state transition matrix approach. Full wave transversal field equations in spectral domain are derived for anisotropic medium in cylindrical coordinates. These expressions are formed into a set of linear first order differential equations. The solution at each layer is expressed in terms of the state transition matrices which are evaluated numerically....
Effect of Flow Rate Controllers and their Opening Levels on Liquid Steel Flow in Continuous Casting Mold
Gursoy, Kadir Ali; Yavuz, Mehmet Metin (2016-01-01)
The present study investigates the mold flow structure at constant throughput condition for different slide-gate and stopper rod openings by utilizing computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling. Detailed validation of the CFD models are conducted using available experimental data and the performances of three different turbulence models, standard k-epsilon, realizable k-epsilon and k-omega SST are compared. The constant throughput casting operations for different slide-gate and stopper rod controller openin...
Effect of hydraulic parameters on the formation of vortices at intake structures
Baykara, Ali; Göğüş, Mustafa; Köken, Mete; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the hydraulic conditions at which air-entraining vortices would form in front of horizontal intakes and to determine the ways of eliminating the formation of these vortices by testing anti-vortex devices. For these reasons, a series of experiments were conducted in an experimental setup composed of a reservoir having the dimensions of 3.10 m x 3.10 m x 2.20 m and a pump connected to the intake pipe. Within the reservoir, between the concrete side walls a...
