Having become widespread and easily accessible with the rapid advancements in technology, augmented reality (AR) offers potential uses for industrial designers, especially for design students. Some design stages, during which traditional tools and methods are used, may not fully communicate the total experience that a product offers. AR can provide a digital layer in which designers can present information and make their presentations more interactive. With this aim in mind, design practice fieldwork with three progressive studies was conducted. The results show that AR can be utilized mainly in presentation and prototyping stages of a design process, to show details such as audiovisual feedback and digital interfaces. With further developments, AR has potential use for several other design activities.

Experience reflection modelling (ERM) as a generative research method and student engagement in product design at undergraduate level
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla; Department of Industrial Design (2013)
Research approaches driven by design thinking have the potential to bridge early stages of design process to idea generation phases in design education. Generative research is emerged from participatory approach which is used at early stages of design process aims to elicit user needs, experiences, expectations and preferences by using generative tools and techniques through helping non-designer participants express their thoughts, feelings, opinions effectively independent of their skills and abilities in ...
Augmented reality for enhanced student industrial design presentations
Topal, Basak; Şener Pedgley, Bahar (2015-01-01)
Augmented reality (AR) has developed rapidly in recent years, causing the technology to move out of the preserve of large budgets and significant infrastructure, into an accessible and affordable visualization tool capable of running on a smart phone. However, the usage of this technology for superimposing digital content such as 3D models and images onto the real world, has not been sufficiently explored in industrial and engineering design for presentation purposes. Even though designers have access to va...
Experience reflection modelling as a generative research method in an educational case for sustainable product design
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla (2014-01-01)
A generative research method, namely Experience Reflection Modelling (ERM), has been developed aimed at helping students explore and reflect upon design considerations for sustainability in the idea generation phase of a design process. ERM has been integrated into a product design for sustainability project as part of the design education in the Department of Industrial Design at Middle East Technical University. This paper begins by providing an overview of the generative research approach, explaining its...
The role of space in interdisciplinary collaboration in design education
Kaygan, Pınar; Aydınoğlu, Arsev Umur (2018-09-01)
The growing interest in the collaborative design education for innovation has mainly been concerned with students and learning outcomes. We know less about the collaboration between the tutors who teach interdisciplinary design courses. Addressing this gap, this article explores the effect of space on the interdisciplinary collaboration between faculty members from the fields of industrial design, architecture, engineering and business administration, who come together to design and conduct an extra-curricu...
Evaluation of basic design education at METU department of industrial design
Bayırlı, Ümit; Özgen Koçyıldırım, Dalsu; Department of Industrial Design (2015)
Basic Design is a crucial course for design education. This course is offered in the first year to initiate students to the theory, practice and communication of design and to lay a basis on which more advanced and specialized knowledge will be gathered throughout the rest of their design education and careers. However, the course's results, influence in design education and methods of conduct receives many criticisms from students, educators, designers and researchers. Even though the course plays a foundi...
