Intrinsic properties of organic semiconductors are investigated by Time-Resolved Terahertz Spectroscopy (TRTS) to assess their relative mobilities and efficiencies. Our results are well correlated with device measurements and show the effectiveness and advantages of using this non-contact optical technique to rapidly identify prospective materials. After a brief introduction of the TRTS technique, we summarize our results from relative mobility measurements of the organic semiconductor polymers poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and poly(2,5-bis(3-tetradecylthiophen-2yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (PBTTT) as model active layers in transistor devices. We also synopsize our recent results from relative efficiency studies of blend and alternating multilayer films of zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and buckminsterfullerene (C60) as model active nanolayers for efficient solar cells.

Novel supramolecular ion sensing systems and their application in molecular logic gates
Coşkun, Ali; Akkaya, Engin Umut; Department of Chemistry (2003)
Recognition and sensing of ions is an important front in supramolecular organic chemistry. One remarkable extension of this kind of work is the application of selective switching processes to logic gate operations. In this study, we have designed selective metal ion chelators for zinc and cadmium ions based on dansylamide fluorophores and dipicolylamine chelators. The zinc complex of a previously reported difluoroboradiazaindacene-bipyridyl derivative was shown to respond anions by an increase in emission i...
Thermal characterization of composites of polyamide-6 and polypropylene involving boron compounds via direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry
İşbaşar Afacan, Güllü Ceyda; Hacaloğlu, Jale; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2013)
In this work, the effects of addition of boron compounds, boron phosphate (BPO4), zinc borate (ZnB), borosilicate (BSi) and lanthanum borate (LaB), on thermal degradation characteristics of composites of polyamide 6 (PA6) and polypropylene (PP) are analyzed via Direct Pyrolysis Mass Spectrometry (DP-MS) technique. The composites of PA6 involve nitrogen containing flame retardants, melamine (Me) or melamine cyanurate (MC); or phosphorus containing flame retardant, aluminum diethylphosphinate (AlPi), with or ...
Accurate formation energies of charged defects in solids: A systematic approach
Vinichenko, Dmitry; Sensoy, Mehmet Gokhan; Friend, Cynthia M.; Kaxiras, Efthimios (2017-06-30)
Defects on surfaces of semiconductors have a strong effect on their reactivity and catalytic properties. The concentration of different charge states of defects is determined by their formation energies. First-principles calculations are an important tool for computing defect formation energies and for studying the microscopic environment of the defect. The main problem associated with the widely used supercell method in these calculations is the error in the electrostatic energy, which is especially pronou...
