The objective of this study was to improve the flexibility of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A based epoxy resin by using a liquid rubber. For this purpose, hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) was used at two concentrations of 1% and 1.5% by weight. In order to improve compatibility between liquid rubber and epoxy, a silane coupling agent (SCA) was also used. Bending test specimens were moulded by using four different orders of mixing of HTPB with SCA and hardener to investigate the compatibility of HTPB and epoxy matrix. Three-point bending tests indicated that the specimens containing HTPB rubber had higher flexibility than neat epoxy specimens. Moreover, liquid rubber modification resulted in increased plastic strain at failure due to the possible decrease in crosslinking density with the change in reactions path. Fractographic examinations under scanning electron microscope indicated the formation of rubber domains in the epoxy matrix. The deformed rubber domains and increased incidence of deformation lines, especially in the third and fourth group specimens, assessed the improvement in flexibility. Effects of liquid rubber modification on the behaviour of epoxy resin
Öztürk, Abdullah; Kaynak, Cevdet (2001-12-01)
The aim of this study was to investigate the behaviour of brittle epoxy resin when modified by liquid rubber for toughening purposes. The changes in mechanical and thermal properties of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A based epoxy resin with hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) (1% and 1.5%) have been studied. A silane coupling agent (SCA) was also utilized to improve the compatibility of HTPB and epoxy matrix. Four groups of specimens were prepared by using different orders of mixing of HTPB with SCA an...
Water dispersed epoxy resin for surface coatings
Şen, Evrim; Gündüz, Güngör; Aras, Leyla; Department of Chemical Engineering (2003)
In this research water dispersed epoxy varnishes were produced by reacting solid epoxy resin with ethylene diamine (EDA) and maleinized fatty acids of linseed oil. Maleinized fatty acid (MFA) was produced by the maleinization process, in which, fatty acid and maleic anhydride were reacted under nitrogen atmosphere. Maleinization was performed in order to insert hydrophilic groups to the fatty acid chains, which were then inserted to the backbone of the epoxy resin. This was done to give water dispersibility...
Interface studies between epoxy and recycled rubber
Sipahi-Saglam, E; Kaynak, Cevdet; Akovali, G (2000-07-19)
This work covers studies on interfaces between epoxy and recycled rubber used as toughening phase in epoxy resins. Different surface modification techniques were used to improve the compatibility at the interface between the rubber particles and the epoxy matrix. Silane coupling agents, plasma surface modification and acrylic acid/benzoylperoxide were used to enhance the surface properties of rubber particles. Rubber parts of grinded scrap car tyres with a size range of 355-500 mum after surface treatment w...
Preparation and characterization of conductive polymer composites, and their assessment for electromagnetic interference shielding materials and capacitors
Köysüren, Özcan; Bayram, Göknur; Department of Chemical Engineering (2008)
The aim of this study was to improve electrical properties of conductive polymer composites. For this purpose, various studies were performed using different materials in this dissertation. In order to investigate the effect of alternative composite preparation methods on electrical conductivity, nylon 6/carbon black systems were prepared by both in-situ polymerization and melt-compounding techniques. When compared with melt compounding, in-situ polymerization method provided enhancement in electrical condu...
Mechanical properties of HTPB-IPDI-based elastomers
Haska, SB; Bayramli, E; Pekel, F; Özkar, Saim (1997-06-20)
A polyurethane elastomer having mechanical and adhesive properties suitable for liner applications in solid rocket propellants was developed using HTPB as the prepolymer and IPDI as the curing agent. The effects of the NCO/OH ratio (R value) and the triol/diol ratio on the mechanical properties of the polyurethane matrix were investigated. The reaction of HTPB and IPDI is followed by monitoring the changes in the IR absorption bands of the NCO stretching at 2255 cm(-1) and the CO stretching at 1730 cm(-1). ...
