Effects of liquid rubber modification on the behaviour of epoxy resin

2001-12-01
The aim of this study was to investigate the behaviour of brittle epoxy resin when modified by liquid rubber for toughening purposes. The changes in mechanical and thermal properties of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A based epoxy resin with hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) (1% and 1.5%) have been studied. A silane coupling agent (SCA) was also utilized to improve the compatibility of HTPB and epoxy matrix. Four groups of specimens were prepared by using different orders of mixing of HTPB with SCA and hardener. Tension and impact tests were performed in order to observe the effect of rubber modification, SCA and mixing processes on the mechanical properties. Tensile strength and impact toughness values were increased in the specimens containing 1% HTPB and 2% SCA. Furthermore. it was found that rubber modification markedly increased the plastic strain at failure due to the possible decrease in crosslinking density with the change in path of the reactions. The changes in storage modulus and glass transition temperatures of all specimens were also evaluated by dynamic mechanical analysis. Fracture surfaces of all specimens were examined by scanning electron microscope. Use of SCA and different mixing orders improved the interaction between HTPB and epoxy matrix. The deformed rubber domains and higher amounts of deformation lines in some specimens indicated the improvement in toughness. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Flexibility improvement of epoxy resin by liquid rubber modification
Kaynak, Cevdet; Tincer, T (2002-09-01)
The objective of this study was to improve the flexibility of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A based epoxy resin by using a liquid rubber. For this purpose, hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) was used at two concentrations of 1% and 1.5% by weight. In order to improve compatibility between liquid rubber and epoxy, a silane coupling agent (SCA) was also used. Bending test specimens were moulded by using four different orders of mixing of HTPB with SCA and hardener to investigate the compatibility of HTP...
Effects of RTM mold temperature and vacuum on the mechanical properties of epoxy/glass fiber composite plates
Kaynak, Cevdet; Isitman, Nihat Ali (2008-08-01)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of mold temperature, application of vacuum at resin exit ports, and initial resin temperature on the mechanical properties of epoxy matrix woven glass fiber reinforced composite specimens produced by resin transfer molding (RTM). For this purpose, six mold temperatures (25, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 degrees C), two initial resin temperatures (15 and 28 degrees C), and vacuum (0.03 bar) and without vacuum (similar to 1 bar) conditions are utilized. Speci...
Effect of resin and fiber on the abrasion, impact and pressure resistance of cylindrical composite structures
Kaya, Derya; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Department of Chemical Engineering (2011)
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of resin and fiber on the abrasion, impact and internal pressure resistances of fiber reinforced plastic composite pipes produced by continuous filament winding method. For this study, pipe samples were produced with different combinations of resin type, fiber type, fiber amount and fiber length. All the samples were tested in accordance with the related ISO (International Organization for Standardization), DIN (German Standardization Institution) and BSI...
Effect of Polymers on the Rheological Properties of KCl Polymer Type Drilling Fluid
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (2005-05-01)
In the course of this research, the effect of two polymers (xanthan gum and polyanionic cellulose) on the rheological properties of KCl/polymer type drilling fluids was investigated. Non-Newtonian drilling fluids are conventionally characterized by rheological models (Bingham Plastic, Power Law, Casson, Herchel-Bulkley and Robertson-Stiff). In this research, forty-five KCl/polymer data sets of varying compositions are prepared. Polymer addition to the system has affected the model and caused a variation of ...
Effect of expandable graphite on flame retardant, thermal and mechanical properties of thermoplastic polyurethane composites filled with huntite&hydromagnesite mineral
Guler, Turkan; Tayfun, Umit; Bayramlı, Erdal; DOĞAN, Mehmet (2017-01-10)
The effect of expandable graphite (EG) was studied on the flame retardant, thermal and mechanical properties of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) containing huntite&hydromagnesite (HH). According to the flammability tests results, the synergistic interaction was observed between HH and EG. The maximum limiting oxygen index (LOI value was observed at a ratio of 1:1 (HH:EG) and the highest vertical burning test (UL-94) rating of V0 was observed at a ratios of 4:1, 3:2 and 1:1. The synergistic interaction betwe...
