Utilization of Non-destructive Methods for Determining the Effect of Age-Hardening on Impact Toughness of 2024 Al-Cu-Mg Alloy

2008-12-01
The aim of the study is to investigate the correlation between non-destructive measurements and impact toughness of 2024 Al-alloy. Following the solutionizing at 493 degrees C/1 h and water quench, the samples were aged at 190 degrees C for various periods between 0.5 h and 18 h. Hardness, impact toughness, sound velocity, and electrical conductivity were measured for each specimen group, and fracture surfaces were investigated by SEM. To focus on only the effect of precipitation, the process variables were minimized by preparing the samples from the same batch, and applying the identical procedure for solution heat treatment and quenching. Any cold deformation prior to aging of the samples was not applied. It has been concluded that sound velocity and electrical conductivity measurements are promising for the determination of variations in the impact toughness of the precipitation hardened 2024 Al-alloy.

Monitoring the Microstructural Evolution in Spheroidized Steels by Magnetic Barkhausen Noise Measurements
DAVUT, Kemal; Gür, Cemil Hakan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2010-12-01)
The aim of this study is to monitor nondestructively the degree of spheroidization in steels by Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN) method. Various series of specimens consisting of either lamellar pearlite or partially/completely spheroidized carbides were produced from AISI 1060 steel by appropriate heat treatments. All specimens were characterized by metallographic examinations, hardness and MBN measurements. The results show that MBN signals are very sensitive to the variations in the microstructure caused ...
Development of test structures and methods for characterization of MEMS materials
Yıldırım, Ender; Arıkan, Mehmet Ali Sahir; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
This study concerns with the testing methods for mechanical characterization at micron scale. The need for the study arises from the fact that the mechanical properties of materials at micron scale differ compared to their bulk counterparts, depending on the microfabrication method involved. Various test structures are designed according to the criteria specified in this thesis, and tested for this purpose in micron scale. Static and fatigue properties of the materials are aimed to be extracted through the ...
A SURVEY OF FATIGUE CRACK-GROWTH LIFE ESTIMATION METHODOLOGIES
AKYUREK, T; BILIR, OG (Elsevier BV, 1992-07-01)
In this study, three fatigue crack growth life estimation methodologies are reviewed and sample calculations are made using these methodologies. Comparisons of the results with respect to the methodologies are made. Three computer codes which represent these methodologies, CRACKS IV, FAST and FATIGUE, are selected for the analyses. The estimations are also correlated to the test results.
Jk-integral formulation and implementation for thermally loaded orthotropic functionally graded materials
Arman, Eyüp Erhan; Dağ, Serkan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008)
The main aim of this study is to utilize a Jk-integral based computational method in order to calculate crack tip parameters for orthotropic functionally graded materials (FGMs). The crack is subjected to mixed mode thermal loading. Mixed mode thermal fracture analysis requires the calculation of mode-I and mode-II stress intensity factors (KI ,KII ). In addition to stress intensity factors, energy release rate and T-stress are calculated by means of Jk-integral. Jk-integral is defined as a line integral ov...
Axisymmetric finite cylinder with one end clamped and the other under uniform tension containing a penny-shaped crack
KAMAN, METE ONUR; Gecit, Mehmet Rusen (Elsevier BV, 2008-09-01)
This study considers the axisymmetric analysis of a finite cylinder containing a penny-shaped transverse crack. Material of the cylinder is assumed to be linearly elastic and isotropic. One end of the cylinder is bonded to a fixed support while the other end is subjected to uniform axial tension. Solution is obtained by superposing the solutions for an infinite cylinder loaded at infinity and an infinite cylinder containing four cracks and a rigid inclusion loaded along the cracks and the inclusion. When th...
