A short and efficient synthetic strategy for the synthesis of triazene-substituted push–pull dyes has been developed. The formal [2 + 2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization was utilized for the preparation of the target push–pull dyes. These atom-economic, click-type chemical transformations occurred under ambient conditions and provided structurally interesting push–pull dyes in high yields. The effects of different triazene substituents on optical and non-linear optical properties were investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT), in order to support design criteria. The dipole moment, HOMO-LUMO gaps, electronegativity, global chemical hardness and softness, average polarizability, first hyperpolarizability were calculated for push–pull dyes at the CAM-B3LYP/6–31++G(d,p) level of theory. Frontier orbital depictions and electrostatic potential maps were used to establish charge-transfer characteristics of the aforementioned molecules.

Preparation and characterization of carbon supported platinum nanocatalysts with different surfactants for C1 to C3 alcohol oxidations
Ertan, Salih; Gökağaç Arslan, Gülsün; Department of Chemistry (2011)
In this thesis, carbon supported platinum nanoparticles have been prepared by using PtCl4 as a starting material and 1-octanethiol, 1-decanethiol, 1-dodecanethiol and 1-hexadecanethiol as surfactants for methanol, ethanol and 2-propanol oxidation reactions. The structure, particle sizes and surface morphologies of the platinum were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD and TEM results indicate that all prepared catalysts have ...
Synthetic Design of Polyester Electrolytes Guided by Hydrophobicity Calculations
Yıldırım, Erol; Peretic, Matthew J.; Pasquinelli, Melissa A.; Mathers, Robert T. (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2016-10-25)
Partition coefficients (LogP) help to quantify hydrophobicity, which can be used to guide the design of polymer electrolytes with properties. Thus, this study combined synthetic experiments and modeling to produce polyester electrolytes that solubilize lithium salts. These polyester electrolytes were derived from natural sources and polymerized with different ratios of polyols (diglycerol, glycerol, and diethylene glycol) and citric acid in the presence of lithium salts (LiTf and LiTFSI). The Fisher esterif...
Preparation and characterization of thermally stable phosphonium organoclays and their use in poly(ethylene terephthalate) nanocomposites
Abdallah, Wissam; Yılmazer, Ülkü (Wiley, 2013-06-15)
Purification of montmorillonite rich bentonite followed by surface modification using organic salts was performed. The bentonite was purified by sedimentation and then surface modified by ion exchange using alkyl- and aryl-based phosphonium salts. The thermal stability, morphology, melt flow, and mechanical properties of the poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) nanocomposites prepared with these organoclays were studied with and without using a reactive elastomeric compatibilizer. TEM results showed that the ...
Synthesis of various camphor-based chiral pyridine derivatives
Işık, Murat; Tanyeli, Cihangir; Department of Chemistry (2005)
Chiral aromatic nitrogen heterocycles are finding many applications in asymmetric organic synthesis, particularly as ligands in the preparation of chiral metal complexes. Since camphor-based chiral auxiliaries are known to be especially effective, a number of pyridines fused to the camphor skeleton have been reported. It is well known that nicotinic acid and its derivatives exhibiting qualitatively the biological activity of nicotinamide, which acts as an electron acceptor in many biological redox reactions...
Synthesis and characterizations of N,N,N ',N '-tetrakis (diphenylphosphino)ethylendiamine derivatives: Use of palladium(II) complex as pre-catalyst in Suzuki coupling and Heck reactions

Oxidation of N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(diphenylphosphino)ethylendiamine (1) with elemental sulfur and selenium gives the corresponding sulfide and selenide, respectively, [(Ph2P(E))(2)NCH2CH2N(P(E)Ph-2)(2)] (E: S 1a, Se 1b). Complexes of 1 [(M2Cl4){(Ph2P)(2)NCH2CH2N(PPh2)(2)}] (M: Ni(II) 1c, Pd(II) 1d, Pt(II) 1e) were prepared by the reaction of 1 with NiCl2 or [MCl2(COD)] (M = Pd, Pt). The new compounds were characterized by NMR, IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The catalytic activity of Pd(II) complex 1d ...
