The production of tungsten by direct current reduction has been investigated. Experimental studies involved the electrochemical reduction of the solid tungsten compounds tungsten trioxide (WO(3)) and calcium tungstate (CaWO(4)) in the form of an assembled cathode of porous pellets attached to a current collector. Molten calcium chloride and a molten solution of calcium chloride and sodium chloride at eutectic composition, 48 pct mol NaCl, were used as the electrolytes. Reduced samples were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction analyses and scanning electron microscopy. The results of X-ray analyses, supported with thermodynamic computations, showed that WO(3) cannot be used without loss in processes that involve the use of CaCl(2) at high temperatures because it reacts with CaCl(2) by releasing volatile tungsten oxychloride. In the electrochemical reduction of CaWO(4), X-ray diffraction results indicated the presence of tungsten with significant concentrations of calcium compounds. Metallic tungsten was obtained after treating the reduced samples with dilute hydrochloric acid solutions.

Nanocrystallization in Cu-Zr-Al-Sm Bulk Metallic Glasses
Sıkan, Fatih; Yaşar, Bengisu; KALAY, İLKAY (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2018-04-01)
The effect of rare-earth element (Sm) microalloying on the thermal stability and crystallization kinetics of melt-spun ribbons and suction-cast rods of Zr48Cu38.4Al9.6Sm4 alloy were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atom probe tomography (APT). The XRD results of constant heating rate annealing indicated that amorphous Zr48Cu38.4Al9.6Sm4 melt-spun ribbons devitrifies into Cu2Sm at 673 K (400 A degrees C). The sequ...
Stability analysis of graphene nanoribbons by molecular dynamics simulations
Dugan, N.; Erkoç, Şakir (Wiley, 2008-04-01)
In this work, stability of graphene nanoribbons are investigated using molecular dynamics. Simulations include heating armchair and zigzag-edged nanoribbons of widths varying between one and nine hexagonal rings until the bonds between carbon atoms start to break. Breaking temperatures and binding energies per atom for different widths are presented for both armchair and zigzag-edged cases. A nontrivial relation between stability and width is observed and discussed.
Investigating the effects of hardening of aluminium alloys on equal-channel angular pressing-A finite-element study
Karpuz, P.; Simsir, C.; Gür, Cemil Hakan (Elsevier BV, 2009-03-15)
Equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) is a promising severe plastic deformation method for production of ultrafine-grained bulk metals and alloys with considerably improved mechanical properties. In this study, numerical experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of strain hardening of aluminum alloys on the process performance of ECAP via finite element modeling. In the constitutive model, isothermal-plane strain, frictionless condition was assumed. The numerical results showed that strain hard...
Nanowires assembled from iron manganite nanoparticles: Synthesis, characterization, and investigation of electrocatalytic properties for water oxidation reaction
Çetin, Asude; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar; Nalbant Esentürk, Emren (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2019-09-30)
The development of stable and effective earth-abundant metal oxide electrocatalysts is very crucial to improve competence of water electrolysis. In this study, iron manganite (FeMnO3) nanomaterials were synthesized as an affordable electrocatalyst for water oxidation reactions. The structural and chemical properties of FeMnO3 nanomaterials were studied by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energydispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively c...
Energy band gap and oscillator parameters of Ga4Se3S single crystals
Qasrawi, A. F.; Hasanlı, Nızamı (Elsevier BV, 2007-06-01)
The optical properties of the Bridgman method grown Ga4Se3S crystals have been investigated by means of room temperature, transmittance and reflectance spectral analysis. The optical data have revealed an indirect allowed transition band gap of 2.08 eV. The room temperature refractive index, which was calculated from the reflectance and transmittance data, allowed the identification of the dispersion and oscillator energies, static dielectric constant and static refractive index as 21.08 and 3.85 eV, 6.48 a...
