With generative design strategies, the act of design, the problem-solving process, and the interaction, understanding and representation of design artefacts have changed. As such strategies entail a large number of possible design solutions, they also expand the design search space immensely. In addition, due to the automated design generation process, the interaction of the designer through the design process has decreased. This research problematizes two major points as (1) the broad design spaces of generative design systems that are populated by many design instances and (2) the elimination of designerly decisions and evaluation from the design artefact due to automated generation processes. As a solution to these problems, a visual structuring strategy is proposed. This strategy aims to act as a mediator between the designer and the design artefact during the generative process and manage the complexity resulting from the multiplicity of solutions. For visual structuring, three methods are proposed and classified as (1) perception-based visual structuring, (2) retrieval-based structuring, and (3) optimality-based structuring within the scope of this research.

With the adoption of computational strategies in design, the act of design, the process of problem solving, and the interaction, understanding and the representation of design artefacts has changed. With generative design methods, the understanding of design as artefact gives way to design as process. Generative methods entail multiple design solutions, which enlarge the design search space due to the large number of possible design solutions. Regarding the automated design generation process, the interacti...
Creative Design Exploration By Parametric Generative Systems In Architecture
Gürsel Dino, İpek (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2012-01-01)
This paper discusses parametric design systems as a generative tool in architectural design. Parametric tools are algorithmically based, and therefore offer increased computational control over design geometry during design activity. Their adaptability and responsiveness to changing design criteria and requirements make parametric models especially useful for design exploration in complex and dynamic design settings. In performance based design, parametric control of form is particularly valuable, such that...
Design as a Collaborative Process A Systematic and Constructive Model for Developing Play Material for Blind Visually Impaired Preschool Children
Börekçi, Naz Ayşe Güzide Z. (2002-05-14)
This paper discusses a design process lived through, during the application of a model derived from design methodology and devised towards attaining a particular task. The task was: Designing a play system to contribute to the pre-school blind child’s development of object permanence, sense of self, and spatial concepts. The model employed was based on a systematic and constructive framework towards ensuring consciously made decisions. The paper also discusses the field-testing in play situations of the sys...

Parametric Urban Design Thinking: Shared Patterns in Design by Algorithm and Design by Drawing
Çalışkan, Olgu; Ongun, Gokhan (2021-12-01)
The paper suggests a focused examination of the processes of drafting-based design and parametric design in urbanism. It discusses how spatial design's settled cognition would differ by using algorithmic systems through the altered relationships between the basic operations in design. To reveal the commonalities and distinctions between the two design methods, the authors present the detailed documentation of the workshop series, which experimented with both techniques within similar design contexts. By the...
