A Displacement-Based Approach for the Seismic Retrofitting of Medium Rise Non-Ductile RC Frames with Added Shear Walls

2011-01-01
A simple displacement-based methodology is presented in this study for the seismic retrofitting of medium height non-ductile concrete frames. Deformation capacities of the existing columns control design. A minimum amount of infill shear walls are added in both orthogonal directions for maintaining the deformation levels below the level dictated by the existing columns, which are usually at the ground story. Interstory drifts and member end rotations are employed as performance parameters. The proposed displacement based approach has been implemented to school buildings which require higher seismic performance compared to ordinary buildings.

Importance of Degrading Behavior for Seismic Performance Evaluation of Simple Structural Systems
Erberik, Murat Altuğ (Informa UK Limited, 2011-01-01)
This study focuses on effect of degradation characteristics on seismic performance of simple structural systems. Equivalent single degree of freedom systems are used for which the structural characteristics are taken from existing reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings. Simulation of degrading behavior is achieved by considering actual experimental data. To obtain the seismic response of degrading structural systems, two different approaches are used: inelastic spectral analysis and fragility analysis. Ac...
Development of Fragility Curves for Single-Column RC Italian Bridges Using Nonlinear Static Analysis
Perdomo, Camilo; Monteiro, Ricardo; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Informa UK Limited, 2020-05-07)
The main objective of this study is to assess the accuracy and suitability of Nonlinear Static Procedures (NSPs) in the development of analytical damage fragility curves for seismic risk assessment of large portfolios of Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridges. Seven NSP approaches, from widely used single-mode conventional pushover-based approaches to the more rigorous multi-mode conventional or adaptive pushover-based procedures are implemented. By systematically comparing fragility curve estimations in terms of...
An approximate procedure for estimating the member demands in mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings
Akpinar, Ugur; Binici, Barış; Yakut, Ahmet; Tuncay, Kağan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-01-01)
Seismic assessment of mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings is important for urban seismic risk reduction. Nonlinear time history analysis is the state-of-the-art analysis tool for this purpose. However, the number of such buildings may reach to several tens of thousands in metropolitan cities of earthquake prone countries. This necessitates faster yet sufficiently accurate assessment methods to mitigate the seismic risk. In this study, a simple and efficient approach is developed and validated for the ass...
Probabilistic seismic hazard assessment of Eastern Marmara Region
Gülerce, Zeynep (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-10-01)
The objective of this study is to evaluate the seismic hazard in Eastern Marmara Region using an improved probabilistic seismic hazard assessment methodology. Two significant improvements over the previous seismic hazard assessment practices are accomplished in this study: advanced seismic source characterization models in terms of source geometry and recurrence relationships are developed, and improved global ground motion models (NGA-W1 models) are employed to represent the ground motion variability. Plan...
Experimental evaluation of geomembrane/geotextile interface as base isolating system
Kalpakci, V.; Bonab, A. T.; Özkan, M. Yener; Gülerce, Zeynep (Thomas Telford Ltd., 2018-02-01)
The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of the geomembrane/geotextile interface on the seismic response of small-to-moderate height structures. Three building models with first-mode natural frequencies changing between 2-4 Hz (representing two, three and four storey structures) were tested with and without the addition of geomembrane/geotextile interface using the shaking table test setup by employing harmonic and modified/ scaled ground motions. Experimental results showed that the geomembran...
