In the scope of achieving the separation of chiral molecules, enzyme enhanced ultrafiltration (EEUF), a new method based on polymer enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF), utilizing apoenzymes as ligands, was developed. Benzoin was chosen as the model chiral molecule. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) and apo form of benzaldehyde lyase (BAL) (E.C. 4.1.2.38) were used as chiral ligands in PEUF and EEUF experiments, respectively. In order to bind to the target enantiomer well, the addition of ligand to the benzoin solution was followed by ultrafiltration. With the use of BSA as ligand, adaptation of PEUF for chiral target molecules and process parameter optimization was carried out; whereas, in EEUF studies the effect of ligand concentration was focused on. In PEUF experiments, although total benzoin retention values reached to 48.7% and 41.3% at pH 10, for 15% (v/v) PEG 400 and 30% (v/v) DMSO cosolvents, respectively; obtained enantiomeric excess (ee) % values were all less than 20%. In EEUF experiments, at BAL concentrations greater than 158 ppm, total benzoin retention and ee% remained constant at ca. 75% and 60%, respectively. On the other hand, at 61 ppm BAL concentration, total benzoin retention was kept at ca. 75%, but ee% decreased to ca. 30%, probably due to the nonspecific binding of benzoin to DNA and other proteins. Thus, the method developed enzyme enhanced ultrafiltration, functioned with its intended purpose effectively in chiral separation.

Effect of operating parameters on selective separation of heavy metals from binary mixtures via polymer enhanced ultrafiltration
Muslehiddinoglu, J; Uludağ, Yusuf; Ozbelge, HO; Yılmaz, Levent (Elsevier BV, 1998-03-18)
Performance of continuous polymer enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) method was investigated for removal of mercury and cadmium from binary mixtures. This method includes the addition of polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a water soluble polymer to bind the metals, which was followed by ultrafiltration operation performed on both laboratory and pilot scale systems. The influence of various operating parameters such as temperature, metal/polymer ratio, presence of calcium ions and pH on retention of metals and permeate...
Use of Specifically Tailored Chelating Polymers for Boron Removal from Aqueous Solutions by Polymer Enhanced Ultrafiltration

Two selective functional polychelatogens, namely hydroxyethylaminoglycerol functioned poly(glycidylmethacrylate (PNS) and Poly(4-Vinyl-1,3-dioxalan-2-one-co-vinyl acetate) (COP) were synthesized and utilized in polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) to remove boron from the aqueous solution. The effect of operating parameters on boron retention was investigated. PNS was synthesized in three molecular weights to observe the effect of molecular weight in borate retention. Increase in pH increased boron reten...
Polycarbonate-polypyrrole mixed matrix gas separation membranes
Hacarlioglu, P; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Yılmaz, Levent (Elsevier BV, 2003-11-01)
The gas separation properties of the polycarbonate-polypyrrole mixed matrix membranes were evaluated based on the introduction of conducting polymer as powder fillers. The electrically conductive fillers are obtained from two main synthesis routes namely electrochemical and chemical methods. The permeation properties of polycarbonate-polypyrrole systems are highly dependent on the synthesis method (electrochemical or chemical) and also the membrane casting conditions (casting solvent type). The introduction...
Development of the ReaxFF Reactive Force Field for Inherent Point Defects in the Si/Silica System
Nayir, Nadire; van Duin, Adri C. T.; Erkoç, Şakir (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2019-05-16)
We redeveloped the ReaxFF force field parameters for Si/O/H interactions that enable molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of Si/SiO2 interfaces and O diffusion in bulk Si at high temperatures, in particular with respect to point defect stability and migration. Our calculations show that the new force field framework (ReaxFF(present)), which was guided by the extensive quantum mechanical-based training set, describes correctly the underlying mechanism of the O-migration in Si network, namely, the diffusion of...
Removal of hexavalent chromium anions via polymer enhanced ultrafiltration using a fully ionized polyelectrolyte
HAKTANIR, CEREN; Ozbelge, H. Onder; Bicak, Niyazi; Yılmaz, Levent (Informa UK Limited, 2017-01-01)
A fully ionized polyelectrolyte was synthesized for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions by continuous polymer enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF). Effect of operating parameters such as pH, loading, polymer, and competing ion concentrations were examined. Highest Cr(VI) retention was obtained at a loading of 0.01 at pH 4. Increasing both polymer and chromate concentrations at a fixed loading of 0.01 decreased the retention which demonstrated the effect of crowding. In the presence of competing anions such as ...
