The aim of the present study was to investigate seventh grade students’ level of understanding in the statistical investigation process when they are given real data sets. More specifically, seventh grade students’ level of understanding in all the components of the statistical investigation process, which are posing a statistical investigation question, collecting data, analyzing data, and interpreting results. The participants of the study were 121 seventh grade students from one public middle school. Data was collected via the Statistical Investigation Process Questionnaire (SIPQ) during the spring semester of the 2017-2018 academic year. To address the research questions, students' answers were analyzed through the item based in-depth analysis. The findings of the study revealed that levels of understanding of the students were generally high in posing a statistical investigation question. Similarly, students’ levels of understanding were the highest in posing a survey question, but their levels of understanding were the lowest in deciding on the data sources. On the other hand, students’ levels of understanding in analyzing data were low. In other words, students had difficulty in choosing a graph suitable for both data type and the aim of the given scenarios like comparing two different data sets. Besides, the graphs of students were problematic in terms of their structural features such as labeling the coordinates, numerating the axes and connecting paired orders with lines. The findings further indicated that students’ levels of understanding were at intermediate level and advanced level while interpreting results. In other words, students integrated the presented information or they extended, predicted or inferred from the presented information.

A Study on fifth grade students' mistakes, difficulties and misconceptions regarding basic fractional concepts and operations
Tarkan Yuırtsever, Nilgün; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2012)
The purpose of this study was to investigate mistakes made by elementary fifth grade students regarding basic fractional concepts and operations, and difficulties that they encounter. The other purpose was to investigate underlying misconceptions and reasons of those difficulties and mistakes. For this purpose, a mixed-method research combining quantitative and qualitative approach respectively was performed. Data were collected from elementary fifth grade students at the end of the spring semester of 2009-...
Getting Ready for the Profession: Prospective Teachers' Noticing Related to Teacher Actions
Osmanoglu, Aslihan; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Koç, Yusuf (2015-01-01)
The aim of this study was to investigate what the prospective elementary mathematics teachers noticed and how their noticing changed in an environment in which they discuss on video cases. To achieve this aim, we asked senior elementary mathematics prospective teachers to watch and discuss videos depicting real elementary mathematics classrooms. In this qualitative study, the main data sources were the participants' reflection papers and interviews with the focus participants. The online discussions among t...
An Investigation of 7th grade students’ statistical literacy about the concepts of average and variation on bar and line graphs
Çatman Aksoy, Emine; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2018)
The aim of the present study was to analyze statistical literacy of seventh grade students on the concepts of “average” and “variation” on bar and line graphs related to the data obtained from social or scientific contexts. More specifically, seventh grade students’ statistical literacy levels in terms of the concepts of “average” and “variation” on bar and line graphs related to the data obtained from social or scientific contexts were determined and how students at different statistical literacy levels de...
An Investigation of eighth grade students' statistical literacy, attitudes towards statistics and thier relationship
Yolcu, Ayşe; Haser, Çiğdem; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2012)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the statistical literacy of 8th grade students and their attitudes towards statistics. Moreover, the relationship between their statistical literacy and attitudes towards statistics was examined. The study was conducted in Yenimahalle district of Ankara in the Spring semester of 2011-2012 academic year. The sample of this study was obtained through cluster random sampling. Nine schools were randomly selected for the study. A total of 1074 eighth grade students in...
Determination of the statistical literacy differences between mathematics and science teachers
Karataş, Melike Dila; Akyüz, Didem (null; 2018-08-01)
The purpose of this research study is to investigate elementary school mathematics and science teachers' questioning, responses, and perceived influences about statistical situations and examine their different perspectives. To achieve this, an interview was conducted with mathematics and science teachers. The interview questions were prepared about statistical literacy that focus on real-world situations and definitions of statistical terms. The result of the study demonstrated statistical literacy differe...
