This article presents the numerical simulation of a 1/3-scale, 5-story reinforced concrete load bearing structural wall model subjected to seismic excitations in the context of IAEA benchmark shaking table experiment conducted in laboratories of CEA in Saclay, France. A series of non-linear time history analyses were performed to simulate the damage experienced and response quantities measured for the specimen tested on a shaking table. The mock-up was subjected to a series of artificial and natural earthquake records. The entire model (concrete, table, masses) was discretized with 3D non-linear finite elements. An elaborate and comprehensive computer simulation process was conducted. A number of modeling iterations were performed for refinement purposes to include those details that were found to be significant in reproducing the measured behavior. The response of the structure was computed both at macro and microlevels and the results were compared with the measured quantities in order to validate the correctness of the analytical model. The comparison of analytical and experimental results yielded extremely good agreement because a numerical model that incorporates the test conditions adequately had been developed.

Seismic upgrading of reinforced concrete frames with structural steel elements
Özçelik, Ramazan; Binici, Barış; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
This thesis examines the seismic internal retrofitting of existing deficient reinforced concrete (RC) structures by using structural steel members. Both experimental and numerical studies were performed. The strengthening methods utilized with the scope of this work are chevron braces, internal steel frames (ISFs), X-braces and column with shear plate. For this purpose, thirteen strengthened and two as built reference one bay one story portal frame specimens having 1/3 scales were tested under constant grav...
Numerical simulation of scour at the rear side of a coastal revetment
Şentürk, Barış Ufuk; Guler, Hasan Gokhan; Baykal, Cüneyt (2023-05-01)
This paper presents the results of a numerical modeling study on the scouring of unprotected rear side material of a rubble mound coastal revetment due to the overtopping of solitary-like waves utilizing a coupled hydro-morphodynamic computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Three cases having various wave heights are tested with six different turbulence models together with different wall functions. The hydrodynamic results (free-surface elevations, overtopping volumes, and jet thicknesses) and morphologic...
Explicit nonlinear analysis for quasi-static behavior of frame structures with pid control and mass scaling
Kocamaz, Korhan; Tuncay, Kağan; Department of Civil Engineering (2018)
Performance-based seismic design of reinforced concrete frame systems requires time history analysis of the structural model under earthquake loads and estimation of damage in the members. Time history analysis of these structures is usually performed using implicit time integration methods. For the implicit integration methods, divergence of the solution is typically treated as the onset of collapse of modelled system. In this study, a nonlinear analysis platform that enables the analysis of the effect of ...
Analytical formulation of maximum length limits of integral bridges on cohesive soils
Dicleli, Murat (Canadian Science Publishing, 2005-08-01)
This paper presents an analytical approach for predicting the length limits of integral bridges built on cohesive soils based on the flexural strength of the abutments and the low cycle fatigue performance of the steel H-piles at the abutments under cyclic thermal loading. First, H-piles that can accommodate large inelastic deformations are determined considering their local buckling instability. Then, a damage model is used to determine the maximum cyclic deformations that such piles can sustain. Next, non...
Numerical modelling and finite element analysis of stress wave propagation for ultrasonic pulse velocity testing of concrete
Yaman, İsmail Özgür; Aktan, Haluk (2006-12-01)
Stress wave propagation through concrete is simulated by finite element analysis. The concrete medium is modeled as a homogeneous material with smeared properties to investigate and establish the suitable finite element analysis method (explicit versus implicit) and analysis parameters (element size, and solution time increment) also suitable for rigorous investigation. In the next step, finite element analysis model of the medium is developed using a digital image processing technique, which distinguishes ...
