In this study, design equations are proposed to calculate the internal forces in hammer-head bridge pier components under the effect of live loads. For this purpose, first a four span benchmark bridge representative of the bridges in the US is selected. Finite element model (FEM) of a benchmark bridge is built, and sensitivity analyses are performed on the bridge model to identify the bridge parameters affecting the magnitude and distribution of the girder live load support reactions and hence the internal forces in the hammer-head pier components. The sensitivity analyses revealed that the number of girders, girder spacing, girder type, slab thickness and the overhang distance significantly affect the magnitude and distribution of the girder live load support reactions and hence the forces in hammer-head pier components. Next, parametric analyses of bridges are performed based on the sensitivity analyses results where each parameter is assigned a wide range of values. Subsequently, minimum least squares regression analyses of more than 50000 data is performed to obtain equations to estimate the maximum cap beam moment and shear force, the maximum column moment and accompanying axial load as well as the maximum column axial load and accompanying moment. The hammer-head pier forces calculated using the design equations are shown to be in reasonably good agreement with FEM analyses results.

Evaluation of topological forms for weight-effective optimum design of single-span steel truss bridges
Hasançebi, Oğuzhan (2011-08-01)
This paper reports a comparative study on design weight efficiency of single span steel truss bridge topologies subjected to gravity loads. The bridges configured according to nine distinct topological forms (namely, Pratt, Parker, Baltimore, Petit, K-Truss, Warren, Subdivided Warren, Quadrangular Warren and Whipple) are designed for minimum weight under various span length requirements of single span truss bridges, and the results obtained with these topological forms are compared. The optimization process...
Optimizing Single-Span Steel Truss Bridges with Simulated Annealing
Hasançebi, Oğuzhan (2010-11-01)
This study presents applications of a simulated annealing integrated solution algorithm to the optimum design of single-span steel truss bridges subjected to gravity loadings. In the optimum design process of a bridge the members are sized simultaneously as the coordinates of the upper chord nodes are determined such that the least design weight is attained for the structure. The design constraints and limitations are imposed in accordance with serviceability and strength provisions of ASD-AISC (Allowable S...
Effects of Soil Bridge Interaction and Abutment Deck Continuity on the Live Load Distribution Factors in Integral Bridge Components
Erhan, Semih; Dicleli, Murat (2009-10-01)
In this study, the effects of soil bridge interaction and abutment deck continuity on the live load distribution in integral bridge components are studied. For this purpose, 2-D and 3-D structural models of typical integral and conventional bridges having various structural, geometric and geotechnical properties are built. The analyses of the models are then conducted under AASHTO live load. The analyses results revealed that soil-bridge interaction has significant effects on the live load distribution in a...
MODELING OF EVAPORATION FROM A SESSILE CONSTANT SHAPE DROPLET
Akkus, Yigit; ÇETİN, BARBAROS; Dursunkaya, Zafer (2017-08-30)
In this study, a computational model for the evaporation from a sessile liquid droplet fed from the center to keep the diameter of the droplet constant is presented. The continuity, momentum and energy equations are solved with temperature dependent thenno-physical properties using COMSOL Multi-physics. At the surface of the droplet, convective heat and evaporative mass fluxes are assigned. Since the flow field is affected by evaporative flux, an iterative scheme is built and the computation is automated us...
Numerical analyses of load tests on model foundations in dry sand
Unsever, Y. S.; Matsumoto, T.; Özkan, M. Yener (2015-01-01)
In this study, a series of vertical and cyclic horizontal load tests on 3-pile piled raft model were carried out in dry sand to investigate the piled raft behaviour under combined loads. Also, numerical modelling of experiments were carried out by using FEM software, PLAXIS 3D. Hardening soil model was employed to model the sand, and elastic model was used for the pile and the raft. Soil parameters were estimated from consolidated drained triaxial tests carried on the sand samples and pile parameters were e...
