After the synchronous interconnection of Turkish Power System to ENTSO-E CESA (former UCTE) System, inter-area oscillations in the range of 0.15 Hz are prone to occur, according to simulation studies. Therefore, some preventive measures should be considered in order to ensure stable operation of the network after the interconnection. This study summarizes the effects of following measures based on computer simulations: 1) Retuning of power system stabilizers (PSS) of the important power plants in Turkey, 2) Controller modification of static VAR compensators (SVC) existing in steel melting arc furnaces that are supplied directly from the transmission system, 3) Controller modification of ±50 MVAR STATCOM which is designed for voltage regulation, 4) Application of breaking resistors as a backup measure in case of malfunctioning of the other solutions. In addition to individual analysis of each measure, their combined contribution is also analyzed. A load flow scenario, in which Turkey exports 900 MW to ENTO-E CESA System, is utilized as a reference scenario. In simulations, Turkish grid is represented in detail and a reduced representation of ENTSO-E CESA network, which consists of 75 nodes and 133 lines, is utilized. The results show positive contribution of each measure to system damping performance. Highly Integrated 3 V Supply Electronics for Electromagnetic Energy Harvesters With Minimum 0.4 V-peak Input
Ulusan, Hasan; Zorlu, Ozge; Muhtaroglu, Ali; Külah, Haluk (2017-07-01)
This paper presents a self-powered interface enabling battery-like operation with a regulated 3 V output from ac signals as low as 0.4 V-peak, generated by electromagnetic energy harvesters under low frequency vibrations. As the first stage of the 180 nm standard CMOS circuit, harvested signal is rectified through an ac/dc doubler with active diodes powered internally by a passive ac/dc quadrupler. The voltage is boosted in the second stage through a low voltage charge pump stimulated by an on-chip ring osc...
Series active filter design, control, and implementation with a novel load voltage harmonic extraction method
Şentürk, Osman Selçuk; Hava, Ahmet Masum; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2007)
Series Active Filters (SAF) are designed for harmonic isolation and load voltage regulation of single-phase and three-phase voltage harmonic source type nonlinear loads. The novel Absolute Value Method (AVM) for load voltage harmonic extraction is proposed and applied in the control algorithm of SAF. The SAF compensated systems are represented by simplified linear models such that SAF controller gains can be easily determined. Harmonic isolation and load voltage regulation performances of 2.5 kW single-phas...
Determination of optimum values for voltage setpoints of power stations in Turkey
Elma, İsmail; Güven, Ali Nezih; Tör, Osman Bülent; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2014)
Voltage control is performed in three hierarchical levels in Turkish power system: primary, secondary and tertiary voltage control. Primary and secondary voltage controls are defined as the regulation of the voltage at the generator terminal and at the high voltage busbar of the power plant according to the pre-determined setpoints. The determination of the voltage setpoints for the power plants, which is defined as the tertiary voltage control, is performed by the operators in National and Regional Load Di...
Performance comparison of passive series R and shunt R-C damped LCL filter for grid-connected inverters
Temiz, Hakan; Demirok, Erhan; Keysan, Ozan; Turkay, Ali; Cetinkaya, Burak (2019-07-01)
LCL filters are widely used in distributed power-generation systems to attenuate high-frequency harmonics caused by pulse-width modulation switching of grid-connected inverters. A resonance occurs due to the series-connected reactive components. In order to damp resonance effects, active and passive damping methods are used. Lower switching frequencies are typically preferred to decrease switching power losses with high-power applications. Thus, control bandwidth of the system is limited and implementation ...
A Kalman Filter Based Approach for Light Flicker Evaluation of Power Systems
Kose, Neslihan; Salor, Ozgul; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal (2009-01-01)
In this paper, a Kalman filtering based approach is proposed to measure the light flicker of the electricity transmission systems. Analytical expressions of the instantaneous light flicker sensation are obtained beginning from a voltage waveform and these expressions are used to obtain a flicker estimation method based on the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) flickermeter. In the proposed method, the frequency domain components of the waveform are obtained by Kalman filtering and these compone...
