Effect of Gas Permeation Temperature and Annealing Procedure on the Performance of Binary and Ternary Mixed Matrix Membranes of Polyethersulfone, SAPO-34, and 2-Hydroxy 5-Methyl Aniline

2014-09-05
This study investigated the effect of annealing time and temperature on gas separation performance of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) prepared from polyethersulfone (PES), SAPO-34, and 2-hydroxy 5-methyl aniline (HMA). A postannealing period at 120 degrees C for a week extensively increased the reproducibility and stability of MMMs, but for pure PES membranes no postannealing was necessary for stable and reproducible performance. The effect of operation temperature was also investigated. The permeabilities of H-2, CO2, and CH4 increased with increasing permeation temperature from 35 degrees C to 120 degrees C, yet CO2/CH4 and H-2/CH4 selectivities decreased. PES/SAPO-34/HMA ternary and PES/SAPO-34 binary MMMs exhibited the highest ideal selectivity and permeability values at all temperatures, respectively. For H-2/CO2 pair, when temperature increased from 35 degrees C to 120 degrees C, selectivity increased from 3.2 to 4.6 and H-2 permeability increased from 8 to 26.5 Barrer for ternary MMM, demonstrating the advantage of using this membrane at high temperatures. The activation energies were in the order of CH4 > H-2 > CO2 for all membranes. PES/SAPO-34/HMA membrane had activation energies higher than that of PES/SAPO-34 membrane, suggesting that HMA acts as a compatibilizer between the two phases. (C) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Effect of preparation parameters on performance of dense homogeneous polycarbonate gas separation membranes
Hacarlioglu, P; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Yılmaz, Levent (Wiley, 2003-10-17)
The aim of this study is to determine the effect of preparation parameters on the membrane permeation mechanism and separation performances of dense homogeneous poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PC) membranes. Blade-casting and drop-casting techniques are used for casting films from solutions with varying concentrations. Chloroform and methylene chloride are used to determine the effect of the properties of the casting solvent. Permeation measurements are done with Ar, N-2, O-2, CH4, CO2, and H, gases. The selec...
Effects of olefin-based compatibilizers on the morphology, thermal and mechanical properties of ABS/polyamide-6 blends
Ozkoc, Guralp; Bayram, Göknur; Bayramli, Erdal (Wiley, 2007-04-15)
In this study, commercially available epoxidized and maleated olefinic copolymers, EMA-GMA (ethylene-methyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate) and EnBACO-MAH (ethylene-n butyl acrylate-carbon monoxide-maleic anhydride), were used at 0, 5, and 10% by weight to compatibilize the blend composed of ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) terpolymer and PA6 (polyamide 6). Compatibilizing performance of these two olefinic polymers was investigated from blend morphologies, thermal and mechanical properties as a functio...
MODELING OF ASYMMETRIC MEMBRANE FORMATION .2. THE EFFECTS OF SURFACE BOUNDARY-CONDITIONS
Yılmaz, Levent (Wiley, 1988-05-20)
An analysis is carried out to evaluate the effects of alternate surface boundary conditions on the predictions of our previously developed (Part I) pseudobinary diffusion model for membrane formation by the phase inversion process. Attention is addressed to a comparison of concentration profiles in the quenched film for a constant flux interface (CF) condition and a mass transfer rate (MT) interface condition. A numerical algorithm is developed to handle the MT condition based on an explicit, finite differe...
Improved adhesive properties and bonding performance of HTPB-based polyurethane elastomer by using aziridine type bond promoter
Gercel, BO; Üner, Deniz; Pekel, F; Özkar, Saim (Wiley, 2001-05-02)
The effect of two aziridine-type bond promoters on adhesive and mechanical properties of a hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene-based elastomeric liner used in solid propellant rockets was investigated by varying the concentration to determine the optimum value. The performance of butyleneiminetrimesoylaziridine (BITA) was compared with that of tris[1-2-methylaziridinyl]phosphine oxide (MAPO) in the elastomeric liner of otherwise the same composition. The adhesive performance of the elastomer to the composite ...
Preparation and Comparison of Two Electrodes for Supercapacitors: Pani/CNT/Ni and Pani/Alizarin-Treated Nickel
Koysuren, Ozcan; Du, Chunsheng; Pan, Ning; Bayram, Göknur (Wiley, 2009-07-15)
Polyaniline in emeraldine form was synthesized in the presence of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the electrochemical capacitance performance of thus formed composite as electrode material has been Studied. The polyaniline/carbon nanotubes (Pani/CNT) composite is found to result in a higher specific capacitance than that of either composite constituent, attributable to the double-layer capacitance behavior of the nanotubes in the Pani/CNT system. However, once assembled into a two-electrode cell, l...
