Effect of preparation parameters on performance of dense homogeneous polycarbonate gas separation membranes

2003-10-17
The aim of this study is to determine the effect of preparation parameters on the membrane permeation mechanism and separation performances of dense homogeneous poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PC) membranes. Blade-casting and drop-casting techniques are used for casting films from solutions with varying concentrations. Chloroform and methylene chloride are used to determine the effect of the properties of the casting solvent. Permeation measurements are done with Ar, N-2, O-2, CH4, CO2, and H, gases. The selectivity values of dense homogeneous membranes with a PC composition of 7% (w/v chloroform) are 1.7 for Ar/N-2, 1.1. for CH4/N-2, 18 for CO2/N-2, 26 for H-2/N-2, and 9.7 for O-2/N-2. These values with a PC composition of 15% (w/v methylene chloride) are 2.7, 1.3, 25, 44, and 13 for the same gases, respectively. In addition to the importance of the solvent type and composition, the casting type and thermal history also affects the performance of the membrane. Increasing the annealing period enhances the selectivity while decreasing the permeability for both casting solvents, yet this thermal history effect strongly depends on the solvent type because of solvent-polymer interactions. Effect of low-energy electron irradiation on (Bi, Pb)-2212 superconductors
Ogun, SE; Goktas, H; Ozkan, H; Hasanlı, Nızamı (Elsevier BV, 2005-06-22)
The effect of low-energy electron irradiation on the properties of the Bi-based superconductors is studied. Two sets of polycrystalline (Bi, Pb)-2212 samples were synthesized by heating the appropriate mixtures of powders at 840 degrees C for 100 h, then quenched or furnace cooled to room temperature. The samples were irradiated by low-energy (1-10 keV), pulsed (20 ns) electron beam up to a dose of 6.2 x 10(15) cm(-2). X- ray diffraction patterns, resistance-temperature behaviours, critical currents, and mi...
Effect of fabrication and process parameters on the morphology and performance of a PAN-based zeolite-filled pervaporation membrane
Okumus, E; Gurkan, T; Yılmaz, Levent (Elsevier BV, 2003-09-15)
The aim of this study is to develop a novel pervaporation membrane for dehydration of azeotropic ethanol-water mixture and to investigate the effect of membrane preparation and process parameters on the membrane performance. Zeolites (3A, 4A and 13X) are added as fillers to the base polymer poly [acrylonitrile] (PAN). It is observed that the volatility of the casting solvent and the annealing temperature strongly affect the performance and morphology of the manufactured membranes. Scanning electron microgra...
PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PERLITE-FILLED HIGH-DENSITY POLYETHYLENES .2. THERMAL AND FLOW PROPERTIES
AKINOKTEM, G; TINCER, T (Wiley, 1994-11-21)
Thermal and flow properties of perlite-filled high-density polyethylenes (HDPE), studied in the first part of the paper, are discussed. Maximum peak temperatures of endotherms (T-mp) and the corresponding relative peak heights were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The data obtained from a Brabender torque rheometer were evaluated to find the melt viscosities at low shear rate during preparation of perlite-HDPE composites. The filler concentration, types of HDPEs, and the use of gamma-APS...
Effect of Gas Permeation Temperature and Annealing Procedure on the Performance of Binary and Ternary Mixed Matrix Membranes of Polyethersulfone, SAPO-34, and 2-Hydroxy 5-Methyl Aniline
Oral, Edibe Eda; Yılmaz, Levent; Kalıpçılar, Halil (Wiley, 2014-09-05)
This study investigated the effect of annealing time and temperature on gas separation performance of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) prepared from polyethersulfone (PES), SAPO-34, and 2-hydroxy 5-methyl aniline (HMA). A postannealing period at 120 degrees C for a week extensively increased the reproducibility and stability of MMMs, but for pure PES membranes no postannealing was necessary for stable and reproducible performance. The effect of operation temperature was also investigated. The permeabilities of...
Effect of molecular and electronic structure on the light-harvesting properties of dye sensitizers
Mete, E.; Üner, Deniz; Cakmak, M.; Gulseren, O.; Ellialtoglu, S. (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2007-05-24)
The systematic trends in structural and electronic properties of perylenediimide (PDI)-derived dye molecules have been investigated by DFT calculations based on the projector-augmented wave (PAW) method including gradient-corrected exchange-correlation effects. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations have been performed to study the visible absorbance activity of these complexes. The effect of different ligands and halogen atoms attached to PDI were studied to characterize the light-ha...
