Hardness and fracture toughness of hydroxylapatite were investigated by artificial neural network (ANN). Hardness and fracture toughness of hydroxylapatite were predicted by using its sintering temperature, sintering time, relative density, and grain size with ANN. It was found that prediction results of its hardness and fracture toughness closely matched with the experimental results. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

Hydrothermal synthesis of Yb-doped BiFeO3 crystallites and their structural, magnetic and electrical properties
Özdilek, Çağrı (Elsevier BV, 2020-01-01)
© 2020 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.The influence of Yb doping on the structural, magnetic and electrical properties of bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) was investigated. Well-crystallized BiFeO3 (BFO) and Yb-doped BiFeO3 powders (Bi1-xYbxFeO3: x = 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.1) were successfully synthesized via a typical hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that powders have a distorted rhombohedral structure with a space group of R3c. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) studies indica...
Synthesis of calcium carbonate microspheres via inert gas bubbling for orthopedic applications
Oral, Cagatay M.; Caliskan, Arda; Goctu, Yagmur; KAPUSUZ, DERYA; Ercan, Batur (Elsevier BV, 2020-02-15)
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) microspheres consisting of vaterite polymorph have been widely used in biomedical applications. Specifically, vaterite microspheres having hollow cores showed significant potential in drug delivery, however the spontaneous transformation of vaterite to other polymorphs in aqueous environments reduced its controlled in vivo release capability. In this work, calcite and aragonite microspheres having hollow/porous inner cores were synthesized -for the first time-using sodium dodecyl s...
Theoretical prediction of bulk glass forming ability (BGFA) of Ti-Cu based multicomponent alloys
SUER, Sila; Mehrabov, Amdulla; Akdeniz, Mahmut Vedat (Elsevier BV, 2009-03-01)
The bulk glass forming ability (BGFA) of Ti-Cu based multicomponent alloys has been evaluated via theoretical modeling and computer simulation studies based on a combination of electronic theory of alloys in the pseudopotential approximation and the statistical thermodynamical theory of liquid alloys The. magnitude of atomic ordering energies, calculated by means of the electronic theory of alloys in the pseudopotential approximation, was subsequently used for calculation of the key thermodynamic parameters...
Initial crystallization in a nanostructured Al-Sm rare earth alloy
Kalay, Yunus Eren; Chumbley, L. S.; Kramer, M. J.; Anderson, I. E. (Elsevier BV, 2010-06-15)
The transformation kinetics and microstructural evolution during initial crystallization in highly driven Al(90)Sm(10) were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). conventional Cu K(alpha) and high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction (HEXRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The highest cooling rate obtained in this study yielded a high number density of fcc-Al nanocrystals, with sizes on the order of 2-5 nm, embedded in a disordered matrix rich in an Al-Sm medium range order ...
A review of bioceramic porous scaffolds for hard tissue applications: Effects of structural features
Jodati, Hossein; Yilmaz, Bengi; Evis, Zafer (Elsevier BV, 2020-07-01)
Tissue engineering has acquired remarkable attention as an alternative strategy to treat and restore bone defects during recent years. A scaffold is a fundamental component for tissue engineering, on which cells attach, proliferate and differentiate to form new desirable functional tissue. The composition, and structural features of scaffolds, including porosity and pore size, play a fundamental role in the success of tissue-engineered construct. This review summarizes the effect of porosity and pore size o...
