In this research, thermogravimetric and mass-spectrometric (TG-MS) analysis and kinetics of different sized (60 mu m,800 mu m, and 3 mm) Saray (Turkish origin) coal is examined at various combustion temperature ranges. Experiments are performed at the heating rate of 40 degrees C/min in an argon atmosphere up to combustion/gasification temperatures (850-1150 degrees C), which, is close to the conditions of fluidized bed systems for high ash coal applications. The combustion tests are performed at isothermal conditions under air and oxygen ambience. The reaction regions, peak and burn-out temperatures, mass loss, maximum mass loss rate, and ash content of the different sized coal samples are evaluated. Reactivity index is also calculated to compare the reactivity of various sized coal samples. This research also focused on the main volatile products (H-2, O-2, CO, CH4, CO2) of different sized coal samples on the basis of both their relative intensities and on their relevancy. Activation energy and Arrhenius constant of the coal samples are calculated using volumetric, grain and the random pore models and the results are discussed. The volumetric model showed higher activation energy values as both in the case of air and oxygen gasification.

Thermal characterization of different origin class-G cements
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (2014-02-01)
In this study, thermal characteristics and kinetics of three different origin class-G cements (Mix, Bolu, and Nuh) were studied using thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). In DSC curves at different heating rates a number of peaks were observed consistently in different temperature intervals. TG/DTG is used to identify the detected phases and the corresponding mass loss. In the dehydration kinetic study of the different origin class-G cement samples, three different methods ...
Temperature-controlled combustion and kinetics of different rank coal samples
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2005-01-01)
Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) has been used to obtain information on the temperature-controlled combustion characteristics of seventeen coals of different origin from Thrace basin of Turkey. Experiments were performed in air atmosphere up to 600degreesC at a heating rate of 10degrees min(-1). The DSC/TG curves clearly demonstrate distinct transitional stages in the entire coal samples studied. Reaction intervals, peak and burn-out temperatures of the coal samples are ...
Evaluation of Turkish oil shales - Thermal analysis approach
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (2001-12-01)
In this research, thermal characteristics of three Turkish oil shales (Himmetoglu, Beypazari and Hatuldag) were studied by thermal analysis techniques (differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry and pressurised differential scanning calorimetry). Two distinct exothermic peaks were identified in all experiments known as low-temperature oxidation and high-temperature oxidation reaction regions. Kinetic data were analysed by Arrhenius, and Coats and Redfern models and the results are discussed.
Application of TGA-MS technique for oil shale characterization and kinetics
Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Varfolomeev, Mikhail A.; Nurgaliev, Danis K.; Kandasamy, Jayaraman (2022-03-01)
Thermal characteristics and model free kinetics of four different oil shale samples were studied using simultaneous thermogravimetry-mass spectrometer (TGA-MS) analysis performed at three different heating rates and under air atmosphere. All the reaction regions and corresponding peak temperatures, mass loss, and the residue of oil shale samples were determined. Meanwhile, the main volatile products, primary alcohols, and aromatic compounds as products of oil shale combustion, were determined on the basis o...
Thermal characterization and gasification kinetics of thrace-saray region coal
Yıldırım, Betül; Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2015)
In this thesis being up as-received and washed and dried, two different coal samples from Saray-Edirkoy field were experimented in order to determine effects of different variables as coal type, heating rate, gas flow rate, isothermal duration, gasifying medium, and final gasification temperature, on isothermal gasification profiles of the coal samples. In the scope of this study, heating rate was changed in the range of 20-50oC/min as 20, 30, 40 and 50oC/min whereas two different gas flow rate values as 60...
