Two-story, three-bay reinforced concrete (RC) frames with and without internal steel frame (ISF) retrofits were tested using continuous pseudo dynamic test method. The ISFs were installed to the middle bay of the RC frame. Test results indicated that ISF retrofit was beneficial in resisting deformation demands without significant damage under simulated ground motions. The ISF shifted the failure mode of the system from a brittle to a ductile mode. The test results were compared with the results of the nonlinear time history analysis. The analysis results were capable of tracing the overall behavior of global response parameters; however, estimations of local demand parameters were less accurate. Pseudo Dynamic Testing of an RC Frame Retrofitted with Chevron Braces
ÖZÇELİK, RAMAZAN; Binici, Barış; Kurç, Özgür (2012-01-01)
Two-story three-bay reinforced concrete frames with and without chevron brace was tested using pseudo dynamic test method. The chevron braces were implemented to the interior span of the RC frame. Chevron-braced frame was observed to be effective to control inter-story drift demands. Based on the observed damage state and dynamic response of the test frames, performance states were discussed for different scales of Duzce ground motions. The test results were compared with the results of the nonlinear time h...
Seismic Retrofit of Deficient RC Structures with Internal Steel Frames
ÖZÇELİK, RAMAZAN; Akpinar, Ugur; Binici, Barış (2011-12-01)
This paper describes an experimental study on internal steel frames (ISFs) to retrofit seismically deficient reinforced concrete (RC) frames. One reference and six strengthened frame specimens were tested under constant gravity load and cyclic lateral displacement excursions. Installation of the ISF with and without anchors to the RC frame was examined. Test results showed that the snug tight ISF installed inside an RC frame may suffice to realize the benefit of implementing ISFs. If the horizontal shear st...
Comparative seismic behavior assessment of a new damper-equipped and conventional chevron-braced frames
Milani, Ali Salem; Dicleli, Murat (2023-02-01)
This paper presents the results of experimental studies performed on three 1/3-scale steel building frames for comparative assessment of the cyclic behavior of a Chevron frame equipped with a newly-developed damper, THDF (Torsional Hysteretic Damper for Frames) in relation to a Chevron special concentrically braced frame (SCBF) and an eccentrically braced frame with a vertical H-link. THDF is a damper with a displacement-dependent post-elastic stiffness, developed for Chevron frames. First, the SCBF was des...
Modeling of Multi Open Phase Fault Condition of Multi-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors
Fei, Marco; Zanasi, Roberto (2011-09-10)
This paper deals with the modeling of multi-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors under multi open phase fault condition. The presented model is suitable for generic number of phases, generic shape of the rotor flux and generic number of open circuit faults. The motor model in fault condition can be used for faults occurring on both adjacent and not adjacent phases. The model can be very useful both for simulation and implementation of fault-tolerant control strategies.
Performance Examination of Two Seismic Strengthening Procedures by Pseudodynamic Testing
Kurt, Efe Gokce; Kurç, Özgür; Binici, Barış; Canbay, Erdem; Ozcebe, Guney (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2012-01-01)
Pseudodynamic testing was employed to observe the seismic performance of two retrofit methods on two-story, three-bay frame structures. The test frames had hollow clay tile (HCT) infill in the central bay and incorporated the seismic deficiencies of Turkish construction practice, such as use of plain reinforcing bars, low-strength concrete, and insufficient confining steel. Two noninvasive and occupant-friendly retrofit schemes suggested in the Turkish Earthquake Code, namely, use of fiber-reinforced polyme...
