A macro-element model with spread of inelasticity and localized nonlinear semi-rigid hinges is presented in this paper. The element is formulated through force-based approach. Spread of inelasticity along element length and section depth is captured by fiber discretization of monitoring sections, and introduction of localized connections enable representation of any type of linear or nonlinear semi-rigid (partially restrained) connection behavior along element length without any increase in number of degrees of freedom. The element is used in conjunction with corotational formulation for the capture of nonlinear geometric effects. The proposed element is used for the analysis of steel structures considering the presence of beam to column semi-rigid connections in this paper. For a true representation of the hysteretic energy dissipation characteristic of a beam to column connection a quadra-linear moment-rotation based model is implemented incorporating pinching, damage, the possibility of residual moment capacity and degradation of stiffness under various scenarios. The behavior is calibrated via experimental data available in the literature. Robustness and accuracy of the proposed element and hysteretic connection model are assessed through numerical and experimental data, and the importance of accurate modeling of cyclic behavior of semi-rigid connections is demonstrated through analysis of a steel moment resisting frame.

Modeling of the nonlinear behavior of steel framed structures with semi rigid connections
Sarıtaş, Afşin; Özel, Halil Fırat (null; 2015-07-21)
A mixed formulation frame finite element with internal semi-rigid connections is presented for the nonlinear analysis of steel structures. Proposed element provides accurate responses for spread of inelasticity along element length by monitoring the nonlinear responses of several crosssections, where spread of inelasticity over each section is captured with fiber discretization. Each material point on the section considers inelastic coupling between normal stress and shear stress. The formulation of the ele...
Applied supervisory control for a flexible manufacturing system
Moor, Thomas; Schmidt, Klaus Verner; Perk, Sebastian (2010-12-01)
This paper presents a case study in the design and implementation of a discrete event system (DES) of real-world complexity. Our DES plant is a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) laboratory model that consists of 29 interacting components and is controlled via 107 digital signals. Regarding controller design, we apply a hierarchical and decentralised synthesis method from earlier work in order to achieve nonblocking and safe closed-loop behaviour. Regarding implementation, we discuss how digital signals tr...
Digital controller design for sampled-data nonlinear systems
Üstüntürk, Ahmet; Kocaoğlan, Erol; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2012)
In this thesis, digital controller design methods for sampled-data nonlinear systems are considered. Although sampled-data nonlinear control has attracted much attention in recent years, the controller design methods for sampled-data nonlinear systems are still limited. Therefore, a range of controller design methods for sampled-data nonlinear systems are developed such as backstepping, adaptive and robust backstepping, reduced-order observer-based output feedback controller design methods based on the Eule...
Three dimensional frame element formulation for nonlinear analysis of semi rigid steel structures
Özel, Halil Fırat; Sarıtaş, Afşin; Karakaş, Zafer (null; 2016-09-21)
In this paper, a force-based three-dimensional frame finite element formulation with spread of inelasticity through the element and localized nonlinear semi-rigid connections is developed. The proposed model utilizes Euler-Bernoulli beam theory assumptions, and adopts fiber discretization of monitored sections along element length and section depth for the spread of inelasticity in order to capture axial force and biaxial bending moment interaction. Defining any type of semi-rigid either linear or nonlinear...
Design, Modelling and Analysis of Morphing Airfoils
Köksal, Buğra; Şahin, Melin; Uzol, Oğuz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2023-1)
This study presents the design, finite element (FE) modeling and analysis of a morphing airfoil using pressure-actuated cell structures. It is aimed that the selected baseline airfoil should be capable of changing its profile to morph into a target airfoil profile. To achieve this goal, first, a NACA 0012 airfoil with a 500 mm chord and 8 mm x 8 mm outer cross-section is obtained in Altair® HyperWorks environment as a baseline airfoil. Following this, the cell actuators responsible for morphing are designed...
