An approach to formulate learning rates and include them in line-of-balance (LOB) calculations is proposed in this paper. Learning rates are generated by modifying historical learning rates of typical construction activities and by incorporating the impact of relevant factors such as, number of operations in one unit, activity complexity, and job and management conditions. Fuzzy set theory is used to develop production rules to treat both factual and uncertain information. An S-type membership function is used to interpret the fuzzy data and produce adjustment factors that are in turn used to modify consecutive learning rates, until an adjusted learning rate is obtained. The adjusted learning rate is then used to calculate expected worker-hours and activity durations at each unit of production (e.g., a floor in a high-rise building, a mile of pavement work, etc.). A final LOB diagram is generated using this information. Different pairs of curves represent the start and the finish times of each activity in sets of units that make use of different numbers of crews. Learning reduces project duration and resource requirements. The proposed approach demonstrates the potential for formalizing the inclusion of learning effects into the LOB scheduling of repetitive-unit construction.

Effect of estimation in goodness-of-fit tests
Eren, Emrah; Sürücü, Barış; Department of Statistics (2009)
In statistical analysis, distributional assumptions are needed to apply parametric procedures. Assumptions about underlying distribution should be true for accurate statistical inferences. Goodness-of-fit tests are used for checking the validity of the distributional assumptions. To apply some of the goodness-of-fit tests, the unknown population parameters are estimated. The null distributions of test statistics become complicated or depend on the unknown parameters if population parameters are replaced by ...
Effects of Non-Abelian Magnetic Fields on Pair Production in Flat and Curved Spaces
Özcan, Berk; Kürkçüoğlu, Seçkin; Department of Physics (2021-9)
Our objective in this thesis is to compute the pair production rates for both bosons and fermions under the influence of non-abelian gauge fields on the manifolds $\mathbb{R}^{3,1} \equiv \mathbb{R}^2 \times \mathbb{R}^{1,1}$ and $S^2 \times \mathbb{R}^{1,1}$. We will compare the pair production rates of the spherical cases with the flat ones, and also compare the non-abelian cases with the abelian ones to see effects of both curvature and non-abelian field strength on the pair production. We first review t...
A bicriteria rescheduling problem on unrelated parallel machines : network flow and enumeration based approaches
Özlen, Melih; Azizoğlu, Meral; Department of Industrial Engineering (2006)
This study considers bicriteria approaches to the minimum cost network flow problem and a rescheduling problem where those approaches find their applications. For the bicriteria integer minimum cost network flow problem, we generate all efficient solutions in two phases. The first phase generates the extreme supported efficient points that are the extreme points of the objective space of the continuous bicriteria network flow problem. In the second phase, we generate the nonextreme supported and unsupported...
Effect of price-sensitive demand and default risk on optimal credit period and cycle time for a deteriorating inventory model
Paul, Asim; Pervin, Magfura; Roy, Sankar Kumar; Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm; Mirzazadeh, Abolfazl (2021-03-01)
In this paper, we formulate and solve an economic order quantity model with default risk. Our main purpose is to investigate retailer's optimal replenishment time and credit period for deteriorating items under selling price-dependent demand while maximizing profit per unit time. Here, shortages are allowed and items are partially backlogged for interested customers. We show that optimal replenishment time and credit period not only exist but they are also unique. We solve the proposed problem analytically....
Effect of record processing schemes on damage potential of near field earthquakes
Akkar, S; Gulkan, P (1999-06-10)
This paper presents the effects of data correction procedures for near field earthquakes in terms of damage potential calculations. For this purpose the horizontal components of the 13 March 1992 Erzincan earthquake are re-corrected by two different data correction schemes. Among the data processing techniques chosen, the first method applies low- and high-pass filtering while the second one uses segmented polynomials for correcting the raw data. The drift spectrum is used as the index for damage potential ...
