Effect of record processing schemes on damage potential of near field earthquakes

Akkar, S
Gulkan, P
This paper presents the effects of data correction procedures for near field earthquakes in terms of damage potential calculations. For this purpose the horizontal components of the 13 March 1992 Erzincan earthquake are re-corrected by two different data correction schemes. Among the data processing techniques chosen, the first method applies low- and high-pass filtering while the second one uses segmented polynomials for correcting the raw data. The drift spectrum is used as the index for damage potential calculations because this captures local drift demand of a structure. The results indicate that the chosen correction methods can result in major differences in calculated displacement records. However, they seem not to affect the damage potential for near field earthquakes because the dominant contribution derives from velocity components of ground motions.

Effect of geofoam location and density on the improvement of buried flexible pipe
Söylemez, Berkan; Huvaj Sarıhan, Nejan (2018-09-16)
In this study, the effects of geofoam location and density for buried pipelines is investigated in laboratory physical model tests. Experiments are conducted in a box having 1 m x 1 m area and 0.6 m height, where a clean sand is used as the bedding and surrounding material. A 20-cm-diameter PVC pipe is positioned on a 10-cm-thick bedding soil layer, and above the pipe EPS geofoam plates with two different densities are placed with varying distances from the pipe crown (0, 5 and 10 cm above the crown). Incre...
Impact of Defected Ground Structures on the Bandwidth of Branch Line Hybrids
Polater, Ahmet Mert; Nesimoglu, Tayfun (2015-12-02)
This paper investigates the impact of defected ground structures (DGS) on the operational bandwidth of microwave circuits. Branch line hybrids were selected to investigate DGS. Three types of branch line hybrids were studied with both hardware and simulation results; a standard branch line hybrid, one using tapered lines and another one using DGS. An optimum model in terms of location, size and number of DGS has been proposed to achieve the widest operational bandwidth. Not only by simulation results, but a...
Effects of Distributed Air-Gaps in the Iron-Core of Shunt Reactors on Inductance Components and Losses
Donuk, A.; Bilgin, H. F.; Ermiş, Muammer (2012-05-01)
In this paper, effects of dividing the air-gap in the iron-core of shunt reactors into several discrete gaps on inductance parameters of the equivalent circuit, core losses and gap losses are investigated. This is achieved by both analytical calculations and Finite Element Method based analyses. A new method called Moving Strip Method is also introduced to estimate the gap loss in the iron-core of shunt reactors having discretely distributed small air-gaps relative to those with large air-gaps. Theoretical ...
Effects of seismic source model parameters on the probabilistic seismic hazard assessment results
Vakilinezhad, Marjan; Gülerce, Zeynep; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
The inputs to the Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) contain large uncertainties regarding the seismic source model parameters; therefore, the results may vary significantly due to subjective judgment and interpretation of the limited data. The objective of this study is to show the effect of seismic source model on the hazard results by quantifying the difference in the design ground motions for different risk levels at different locations around an active tectonic structure. Analysis showed that...
Effect of recycle on radiative heat transfer in the freeboard of a fluidized bed combustor
Selçuk, Nevin; Gogebakan, Yusuf (2005-05-25)
Effect of recycle on radiative heat transfer in the freeboard of a fluidized bed combustor is investigated by applying a previously developed 3-D radiation model to the prediction of incident radiative heat fluxes along the freeboard walls of lignite-fired 0.3 MWt Middle East Technical University (METU) Atmospheric Bubbling Fluidized Bed Combustor (ABFBC) Test Rig and comparing its predictions with measurements. Freeboard is treated as a rectangular enclosure containing gray, absorbing, emitting and isotrop...
